history
The history of the place is linked to the Altenbaumburg from the beginning . This castle ruin is a spur castle on a ridge above the village. It is the ancestral castle of the Raugrafen and one of the largest castle ruins in the Palatinate. Originally in a strategically favorable position in the Alsenz valley, the complex lost its importance after its owners, the Raugrafen, died out in the 14th century. The place name has nothing to do with the Franconian city of Bamberg , but is derived from the name of Altenbaumburg. Older versions of the place name were:
- 1140 Bomeneburg
- 1181 Boumburg
- 1186 Boimeneburg
- 1325 Alten-Beymborg Castle
- 1391 Alten-Beimborg
- 1394 Old Beumburg
- 1412 Old Beinborg
- 1429 Altenbeymburg
- 1444 Old Baymberg
- 1518 Altenbaumburg
- 1528 Altenbeymburg
- 1681 Altenbaumberg
- 1828 Altenbamberg
- 1837 Altenbaumberg
After the Congress of Vienna Altenbamberg came to Bavaria to the Rhine district , where it remained until the end of the Second World War . During the administrative reform of Rhineland-Palatinate in 1969, it was reclassified from the Rockenhausen district to the Bad Kreuznach district. From an ecclesiastical point of view, Altenbamberg still belongs to the Evangelical Church of the Palatinate and the Diocese of Speyer .
