history
Early historical finds
The first settlement of Barweiler probably took place around 500 BC. This is indicated by twenty barrows found in 1930 . During the construction of today's B 258 in 1937, the foundations of a Gallo-Roman temple were found, which was built around the 2nd century AD. The Roman origins were also confirmed in 1954 with the discovery of a Roman well and a burial ground with stone box graves from the 1st century AD.
origin of the name
The name Barweiler probably comes from baro , which translates as "sanctuary" and "sacrificial site". The reason for this name is probably the function as a pre-Christian place of worship. Previously, the origin was traced back to the old high German village baro , which roughly means "bare, bare, desolate".
middle Ages
The place was first mentioned in 855 in a deed of gift from Emperor Lothar I as Brunuilare . Barweiler already had a chapel before 940, which together with the mother church in "Okyshem" ( Üxheim ) belonged to the Trier Abbey of St. Maximin . In a document from Archbishop Ruotbert of Trier , the place appeared in 943 as Barwilra . On May 6, 1140, Pope Innocent II took Barwilre and its church under his protection, along with other possessions of the abbey . In the Liber valoris of the Archdiocese of Cologne from the 14th century, Barweiler is listed as belonging to the Eifeldekanat, but does not designate the place as a parish. The current parish church of St. Gertrud was built in the 18th century, rebuilt in 1826/27 and expanded in the 1960s.
Wonderfully country belonged originally to Barweiler County Nürburg and came in 1290 to the Electorate of Cologne . This affiliation lasted until the end of the 18th century. As part of the electoral office of Nürburg , Barweiler was the seat of a bailiwick . The villages of Barweiler, Bauler , Hoffeld , Müsch , Pomster , Reifferscheid , Rodder , Wiesemscheid and Werft belonged to the bailiwick of Barweiler .
After 1794
As a result of the First Coalition War , the Left Bank of the Rhine , including Barweiler, came under French rule in 1794 . Under French administration, Barweiler became the seat of a Mairie in 1798 , Barweiler belonged to the canton of Adenau and the arrondissement of Bonn in the Rhine-Mosel department . The villages of Bauler , Pompster and Wissemscheid also belonged to Mairie Barweiler .
Due to the resolutions passed at the Congress of Vienna , the Rhineland was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815. The municipality of Barweiler was administered from 1816 on by the mayor's office of Aremberg in the then newly created district of Adenau in the administrative district of Koblenz , from 1822 on Barweiler belonged to the Rhine province . On September 30, 1932, the Adenau district was dissolved, and Barweiler became part of the Ahrweiler district .
Barweiler has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1945 and has belonged to the Adenau community since 1968 .
