From the location it can still be seen today that the Ahr also had a southern branch of the river in earlier times. Oral language the place is also called "Äsel". Insul was first mentioned in a document in 1269 as "Oensel supra Aram". The area where Insul is located belonged to the County of Are in the 12th century , and in the middle of the 13th century the county came with all of its possessions to Kurköln . Insul (also "Essel") was now a honnship that belonged to the Electorate of Cologne, Nürburg , which existed until the end of the 18th century.

Under the French administration, Insul belonged to the Mairie Adenau in the canton of Adenau . After 1815, Insul became a Prussian municipality that became the mayor of Adenau in the then newly formed district of Adenau , which was dissolved in 1932. The mayor's office of Adenau, now called “Amt”, came to the Ahrweiler district , to which Insul has belonged ever since.

Ecclesiastically Insul belonged to the parish of Schuld , which already existed in the 10th century. Around 1570 Insul is mentioned in the documents as a branch of Schuld and in 1631 a chapel in Insul. The chapel was closed in 1882 and replaced by a new chapel in 1884; it is consecrated to St. Rochus . In 1910 the chapel received an organ with six registers, which was set up by the Bonn organ builder Klais .

Insul got its own school in 1863, before that, in 1724, a teacher for Insul was mentioned in a document.
