Mayschoss [ ˈmaɪ̯ʃɔs ] (also written Mayschoss) is a municipality in the district of Ahrweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Altenahr .

Mayschoss is located in the lower Ahr Valley , about 35 kilometers southwest of Bonn on the edge of the Ahr Mountains .

The municipality of Laach to the west , which has a two-digit population, and the residential areas of Mayschoss train station, Bergischer Hof and Lochmühle belong to the local community .

history

Mayschoss was first mentioned in a document in 1106 under the name Meinscozen. It belonged until the end of the 18th century, most recently together with Laach and the ruins of Saffenburg, to the imperial rule of Saffenburg , the district of Mayschoss covered an area of ​​567  hectares .

Municipal council

The council in Mayschoß consists of twelve council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman. Up to 2014 the council had 16 council members.

Hubertus Kunz (CDU) became local mayor of Mayschoss again on September 1, 2016, after having held this office from 1989 to 2009. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in his office for a further five years with a share of the vote of 66.99%.

Kunz's successor and predecessor, Hans-Ulrich Jonas (CDU), had held the office since 2009, but resigned on August 31, 2016 for personal reasons.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main source of income for the municipality is tourism . There are numerous hotels, restaurants, pensions and ostrich taverns . Almost all residents are directly or indirectly involved in viticulture. But there are only a few full-time winemakers left. The largest part are part-time winemakers who are affiliated to the cooperative.

Mayschoß is part of the wine field Walporzheim in the region Ahr . 59 wine-growing businesses are active in the village, and the area under vines is 103  hectares . About 70% of the wine grown are red wine grape varieties (as of 2010). In 1979, 89 businesses were still active, the area under vines at that time was 91 hectares.

The oldest, currently still existing wine cooperative in the world is located in Mayschoss . The Mayschoss-Altenahr wine cooperative was founded in 1868 as a winegrowers' association, which was converted into a cooperative with 18 members in 1869. It now has over 400 members from Mayschoss, Altenahr and Walporzheim. The cultivated vineyard area is around 150 hectares, of which about 80% are red grape varieties and 20% white grape varieties. The main grape variety is Pinot Noir followed by Riesling. Frühburgunder , Blauer Portugieser , Domina , Regent (red), and Weißburgunder , Müller-Thurgau , Kerner (white) are grown in small quantities .

Mayschoss was the location of the television series Weinberg for the TNT series in 2014 and 2015 . In the series the place is called Kaltenzell.

Mayschoß is the venue of the Cologne-Ahrweiler Rally , which has been held around the wine town since 1971.
