The red wine hiking trail (RWW), opened in 1972, connects the wine towns of the Ahr wine-growing region from Bad Bodendorf to the ruins of Are Castle above Altenahr .
history
The establishment of the hiking trail goes back to the Dernau doctor Karl Näkel, the then district administrator Heinz Korbach , Konrad Schubach, the then honorary chairman of the Eifelverein as well as the then mayor Dernaus Willibald Näkel. In November 1964 the local group Dernau of the Eifelverein was brought back to life. In 1967 the Krausberg tower, south of Dernau, was re-inaugurated and the expansion of the Krausberghütte began. Furthermore, hiking trails and hiking facilities were built and the network of trails marked. On June 3, 1972, the red wine trail was set up.

View of the red wine hiking trail near Dernau |
The route of the hiking trail leads along the Ahr for a total of around 36 kilometers from the Are castle ruins above Altenahr via Mayschoss , Rech and Dernau to the former Marienthal monastery and the ruins of the Saffenburg . It goes in the direction of the Rhine past the rock formation of the Bunter Kuh above Walporzheim and the government bunker documentation site , the Roman villa near Ahrweiler , the Silberberg tunnel memorial and on via Heppingen to the station square of Bad Bodendorf.
The main part of the path leads through the vineyards on the northern side of the Ahr. Many parts of the trail are rural roads and paved, as they are also used for agricultural transport. So special hiking equipment is not necessary.
On weekends and in the months of September and October, the red wine hiking trail is the most popular hiking trail in the Ahr valley and is very popular. During the grape harvest from the end of September and during events (running events, wine festivals, fireworks), the hiking trail can be closed in sections. Signs with a stylized red grapevine serve as markers.
In addition to the red wine hiking trail, the Ahrtalweg as part of the AhrSteig connects Altenahr with Walporzheim. The stage of the hiking trail does not lead through the vineyards, but through the Langfigtal along the Ahr.
