particularities

Red wine hiking trail near Walporzheim

The Ahr valley is in parts already through trails such as the running rather close to the river Ahrtalweg and running in the middle part of the valley on the exposed south slope Rotweinwanderweg developed. The installation of the AhrSteig was financed in 2012 from the European Fund for Regional Development and funds from the two federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia . It is initially divided into two sections, the upper Ahr valley (AhrSteig West) and the lower Ahr valley (AhrSteig East). These are connected between Altenahr and Walporzheim by the existing paths, the Ahrtalweg of 16.7 km with little gradients and the red wine hiking trail of 19 km, as well as two other possible connecting paths on the right slope of almost 18 and 20 km respectively. The logo with the two letters A and S links the two symbols A = mountain (red) and S = river course (blue). Of the two sections, the lower section is marked in red and the stages in the upper Ahr valley are marked in blue. The hiking trail is well connected to local public transport by bus lines and the Ahr Valley Railway . The beginning and end of the route can also be reached by train. The road was in September 2013 by the German Hiking Association 's award as a predicate trail . It is looked after and marketed by Ahrtal Tourism in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler . Accommodation is provided by certified "quality hosts, Wanderbaren Germany" and the normal hospitality industry.

The AhrSteig West comprises four stages between 11 and 19 km. It leads from Blankenheim to Altenahr-Kreuzberg.

  • From the source of the Ahr in Blankenheim , the path leads over the plateau and halfway along the slope of the Ahrberge towards Reetzer Mühle. The path now moves away from the Ahr valley. It runs alternating between open fields and forest passages northeast to the Freilinger See (11.1 km).
  • From the lake it goes through Freilingen , over the back of the Hühnerberg with a view to the Nürburg and Hohen Acht . Over the highest point of the stage on the court, the path runs mostly through forest to Aremberg at the foot of the volcanic cone of the same name with the remains of the castle of the same name (11.3 km).
  • Over the 623 m high Aremberg and through the Aremberg nature reserve to Eichenbach , then through the Eichenbacher Forest. The Ahr is crossed at the Streitenau. The path leads past rugged sandstone cliffs to Schuld . Here the Ahr is crossed again and the last stretch of the way leads on the left bank, tracing the course of the Ahr, to Insul (18.7 km).
  • From there the path leads over the Dümpelhardt plateau, the Linder Höhe - always outside Lind - and the Kotzberg, each with wide panoramic views to Kreuzberg, a district of Altenahr . From here the Ahrwein grows (17.4 km).

Four connecting routes lead from Kreuzberg to Walporzheim . They connect the western and eastern AhrSteig stages over a length of 17 to 20 km. The marking “AV1” to “AV4” was selected for these AhrSteig connecting routes.

  • After crossing the Ahr twice behind Altenahr, the AV1 leads over the Krähhardt summit and on the side facing the Ahr through the forests of the Mayschosser and Recher forests to Rech . Over the area of the Krausberghütte with tower it goes to the outskirts of Walporzheim (19.6 km).
  • The AV2 crosses the Hornberg behind Altenahr with a wide view of the Ahr valley and its side valleys. Through the Mayschosser Forest, on the side facing away from the Ahr, up to the Steinerberg plateau and the Hasenkreuz. Extensive forest passages characterize the rest of the route to the outskirts of Walporzheim (17.7 km).
  • The AV3 connects the vineyards of Mayschoss, Rech and Dernau via the red wine hiking trail . In the second part of the stage dominate paved between computing and Walporzheim and concrete farm roads (19,1 km).
  • The AV4 follows the course of the Ahrtalweg. At the beginning it crosses the nature reserve Langfigtal and leads to the outskirts of Mayschoss. A detour to the Saffenburg is possible here. Via Rech, Steinbergsmühle and Dernau it accompanies the Ahrlauf to Walporzheim (16.7 km).

The AhrSteig Ost consists of two stages from Walporzheim to Sinzig am Rhein .
