Freilingen is a district of the municipality Blankenheim (Ahr) in the district of Euskirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located about three kilometers above the Ahr in the Dollendorfer Kalkmulde.

history

Freilingen was built on the site of a Roman estate . Presumably, the first larger settlement arose at the time of the Frankish conquest, an assumption that is supported by grave finds from the Frankish-Merovingian period.

The noblemen of Freilingen are mentioned for the first time in 1351 and their castle changed hands several times in the following centuries through marriage and succession. After being sold in 1826, it was closed down.

As in Lommersdorf , the iron industry (mining and iron smelting) was the most important branch of the economy until the middle of the 19th century, which also included logging and charcoal burning .

Territorially, Freilingen belonged to the Duchy of Arenberg . During the French period, Freilingen was part of the Mairie Lommersdorf in the canton of Blankenheim. It remained an independent municipality until 1969, initially in the Lommersdorf mayor's office and later in the Blankenheim district. Several Aussiedlerhöfe as well as the part of Ahrhütte on the left of the Ahr belong to the former municipality and today's district of Freilingen . On July 1, 1969, the community of Freilingen was incorporated into Blankenheim.

On April 10, 1984, an American McDonnell Douglas F-15 fighter aircraft crashed from Bitburg near Freilinger See. The pilot was able to save himself with the ejector seat.

Attractions

In addition to the St. Martin Chapel from 1684, the two-storey and representative former (quarry stone) Lehenshof Gilles (Lommersdorfer Straße 2) from the 17th century and a 26 m long half-timbered strike yard (1698) have been preserved, just one Farmhouse type preserved in a few copies.

From the West Wall accompanying bunker position , the west and southwest of the town, just some small groups such as the so-called "log cabin" are the village towards the west one kilometer after their leveling in 1981 Hüngersdorf received. The facility, built in 1939, was fully expanded and consisted of 18 components.

Recreational facilities and tourism

Freilinger See

A leisure and recreation area connects to the north to the place. Its focus is on the nine hectares large dam Weilerbach . The so-called "Freilinger See" was completed in 1975 as a reservoir for this purpose. The entire system has to fish in addition to the possibility and water to drive in the area, a mini golf course , a nature trail , a barbecue area and an award-winning campsite .

On the Freilinger Bruch located above there is a holiday village with a swimming pool, tennis courts and a children's playground. The Eifel-Höhen-Route cycle path , which runs around the Eifel National Park , leads through the village .

Public bookcase

On the initiative of a local resident, a public bookcase was set up next to the chapel . The “Freilinger Bücherbude”, inaugurated on October 13, 2012, should be accessible every day of the year from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The goalkeeper of Bundesliga soccer club FC Schalke 04 , Fabian Giefer, from Freilingen , took over the sponsorship.
