history

Already in 1512 there was probably a chapel in Freilingen. This was restored and changed in 1687. A fire in 1891 severely damaged the small church, the restoration lasted until 1895. In the same year, the solemn Benediction took place.

In 1933 a baroque figure of the Virgin Mary was erected in the chapel and was titled “Mediator of Grace”. Since then, Freilingen has been the destination of some pilgrims every October. In 1949 the church was extended by a sacristy and from 1955 to 1956 the nave was extended in the same style by a yoke to the west and a porch was built in front of the west side. At the same time the roof turret was renewed. The plans for the construction work come from the Aachen architect Willy Rommé . The entire roof was renovated between 1981 and 1982.

Building description

St. Martin is a single-nave, three-bay hall church with a choir closed on three sides in the east and a small porch with an entrance portal in the west. The interior of the western yoke houses the organ gallery. In the middle of the slated gable roof rises a square roof turret with an eight-sided kinked hood. The exterior is plastered white, the interior is spanned by ribbed vaults.

Furnishing

The equipment is kept simple. Worth mentioning is the baroque Virgin Mary figure in the choir from around 1700, a stained glass window depicting the division of the mantle of St. Martin from 1893 and a stone figure of St. Josef on the outside wall from the 19th century.
