history

The parish of Alendorf was first mentioned in 1253 together with today's old church. The right of patronage was initially held by Malmedy Abbey , and in 1253 it was transferred to the Cistercian convent in Frauenkron . In 1289 the Steinfeld Abbey received patronage, from 1317 it was owned by the Order of St. John.

In the course of the restructuring of the ecclesiastical landscape during the French era , membership of the diocese also changed. Until 1802 Alendorf was part of the large Eifel deanate of the Archdiocese of Cologne and was then assigned to the Diocese of Trier . In 1825 the parish came back to the Archdiocese of Cologne and since 1930 the parish has belonged to the Diocese of Aachen .

Building history

The church mentioned in 1253 was located in the center of Alendorf and was a simple hall church with three window axes, apse and west tower in the Romanesque style . In the 16th century, this church no longer met the demands of the community and today's old church was built outside the village. The Romanesque church in the center of the village was preserved for centuries, but was finally demolished in the 1860s.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the outside parish church became too small and it was decided in 1915 to build a new parish church in the center of the village. First of all, diocesan architect Franz Statz was commissioned to plan a new parish church. However, these plans were rejected. In 1918 the Cologne architect Edmund Renard designed a new parish church. These plans were revised several times. It was not until the mid-1920s that construction of today's parish church in the center of Alendorf could finally begin. In 1929 the building was completed and was on 27 October 1929 benediziert be. So far the church has not been consecrated by a bishop . In 1967 the church was restored and the choir room was converted. The old church has served as a cemetery chapel since the new parish church was built.
