The old church is the former Roman Catholic parish church in the Blankenheim district of Alendorf in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The church is St. Agatha of Catania and registered under number 37 in the list of architectural monuments in Blankenheim (Ahr) .

location

The church building is located outside in the north of the village of Alendorf, around 350 meters as the crow flies from the town center on a mountain slope and is surrounded by the cemetery.

history

The parish of Alendorf was first mentioned in 1253. The right of patronage was initially held by Malmedy Abbey , and in 1253 it was transferred to the Cistercian convent in Frauenkron . In 1289 the Steinfeld Abbey received patronage, from 1317 it was owned by the Order of St. John. The church, mentioned in 1253 and demolished around 1868, was located in the center of Alendorf.

The old church was built around 1494. The reasons for building a second church outside the village are not known. Since then, today's old church has been used as a parish church in the summer months, and its predecessor church in the village as a parish church for the winter months. Only with the demolition of the church in the village did church life completely shift to the old church. At a later time, the single-nave church in the north received an extension, which was extended in the 18th century and u. a. the sacristy contains. After the New Parish Church was built in the 1920s, the Old Church became useless. However, one campaigned for its preservation and was able to restore the church in the 1930s and thus save it from deterioration. Between 1960 and 1967 the church was restored again under the direction of architect Werner Geyer from Mechernich .

Building description

The old Alendorfer Church is a four-bay hall church in Gothic forms with a mighty four-story bell tower in the west, which is crowned by a rhombic roof, and a single-bay choir closed on five sides in the east. The sacristy is attached to the windowless north wall. The interior is vaulted with Gothic reticulated vaults . The windows have two-lane tracery .

Furnishing

In the interior there is a simple baroque high altar , which is said to come from the Helena chapel in Vilvenich , a Gothic sacrament niche and valuable vault paintings in the area of ​​the choir. The tower hides a valuable two-part bell from the Middle Ages. The smaller and oldest bell was cast by Alef von Thaile in 1444, striking note h '. The larger and younger bell is the work of the Aachen bell founder Jan van Trier from 1527, striking note f sharp '.
