history
Reetz was first mentioned in a document in 1148, and its own church has existed since at least the 15th century. At that time Reetz belonged to the parish of St. Wendelinus Rohr and in 1571 it was added to the newly created parish of St. Johannes Baptist Mülheim . The residents were very dissatisfied with the fact that Reetz was now a branch of Mülheim, which led to a dispute with the Mülheim residents , which could only be finally settled with the parish elevation 301 years later. Reetz finally became an independent parish on January 17, 1872.
Building history
Nothing is known about the origin of the chapel , which existed in the 15th century . In the second half of the 15th century a new church was built, of which the choir and tower are still preserved today. In the 17th century a new sacristy was added to the east wall of the choir and in 1765 the main portal was renewed. In 1888 the north wall had to be rebuilt and received three window openings, as they were already on the south side.
Between 1961 and 1962 the church and the furnishings were renovated, but by the early 1970s the nave was dilapidated and the two outer walls threatened to collapse. For this reason, the nave was completely demolished and rebuilt in its old form between 1976 and 1977, the old stones were reused, the choir and bell tower remained unchanged. Mechernich architect Werner Geyer provided the plans for the reconstruction of the nave .
