Missile position in the Cold War

Former Nike missile emplacement

From 1963, the Belgian armed forces operated a missile position in the Reetz district "Auf dem Kump", where nine Nike missiles were stationed as part of the NATO air defense until the beginning of the 1990s . The position was on a strongly secured area, on which 400 soldiers were active as personnel. In an emergency, nuclear warheads would have been mounted on the missiles, which were under the sole control of the US Army and which remained there until the end of July 1988. They were stored in specially secured bunkers on the missile site.

The radar and control center for this position was west of the neighboring town of Mülheim .

The site of the position has been leased and is not open to the public.
