history
Rohr is an old parish first mentioned in the Liber valoris from 1308. However, there was very likely a church in Rohr much earlier, so the place was listed in the Prümer Urbar in 893 . The right of collation to the church had always been held by the Lords of Aremberg until 1802. Until 1571, Mülheim and Reetz also belonged to the parish as subsidiary communities. Mülheim was separated from Rohr that year and raised to an independent parish. Reetz was re-parished from Rohr to Mülheim. In the course of the restructuring measures during the French period , the parish, which always belonged to the extensive Eifel deanate of the Cologne archdiocese , came to the diocese of Trier . It was not until 1825 that the parish was reassigned to the archbishopric. Rohr has belonged to this diocese since the establishment of the Aachen diocese in 1930.
Building history
Nothing is known about the church mentioned in 1308. It was either rebuilt around 1418 or replaced by a new building, which emerges from a request from Wilhelm von Loen to the Count of Blankenheim. This house of God should not be dedicated to St. Wendelin were consecrated, but to St. Arnulf of Metz . It is not known exactly when the patronage was changed.
The Gothic parish church from the 15th century became dilapidated in the middle of the 19th century and it was decided to build a new parish church. The present church was built in 1864 and the old church was demolished. Who delivered the plans for the new building is unknown. The church consecration took place eight years after completion on August 30, 1872. In 1894 the bell tower was badly damaged by a lightning strike and had to be restored afterwards. During the Second World War , there was only minor damage, most of which occurred in January 1945. The parish church has been restored several times since then.
Building description
St. Wendelin is a single-nave hall church made of quarry stones in the neo-Gothic style . The choir in the east is a little lower than the nave, single-bay and closed on five sides. The single nave nave has three yokes . The four-storey bell tower is built in front of it in the west, which is crowned by an eight-sided bent helmet. The windows all have tracery and the interior is spanned by ribbed vaults.
Furnishing
In the church there are some valuable saints from the previous building. These include a Virgin and a Wendelinus figure, both from the 15th century, a Pietà from the 16th century and a stone Wendelinus figure from 1543. The marble baptismal font (16th century), a lecture cross, also comes from the previous church made of brass (18th century) and the sacrament niche from the beginning of the 15th century.
The high altar from the second half of the 19th century, the confessional and the pews have survived from the neo-Gothic furnishings . The popular altar was created in 1980 from parts of the former communion bench . The three stained glass windows in the choir are also worth mentioning . They were made around 1900 by the Cologne glass painting workshop Reuter & Reichart and are under the theme of the Apostles' Creed .
