The Frühburgunder is a red wine that was created by natural mutation from the Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). It is not yet known whether the wild grape and an as yet unknown grape variety are involved in the creation.

Appearance

The Frühburgunder reaches maturity about two weeks earlier than the Spätburgunder, hence the name. As a result, it is almost never affected by gray mold rot ( Botrytis cinerea ), which can negatively affect the color of Pinot Noir. The berries of the Frühburgunder are smaller than those of the Spätburgunder. Many flavors are in the skin of the grapes. Since the ratio of peel to the rest of the berry is greater with smaller berries and the yield is also lower, the Frühburgunder often produces more velvety and full-bodied wines than its brother.

Due to its early ripeness, the Frühburgunder was often used as a cross partner for new breeds. The Helfensteiner grape variety was created together with the Trollinger and its genes can be found in the Goldriesling and Perle from Csaba varieties through the Muscat précoce de Saumur seedling .

Clone selection

The Frühburgunder threatened to disappear from Germany in the 1960s. At that time there were still 15 hectares in production, some of it from Wuerttemberg Clevner. The Julius Wasem Rodensteiner Hof winery in Ingelheim am Rhein acted as maintenance breeder . Finally, the Geisenheim research institute recognized the potential of the vine and began to systematically select and build clones in the mid-1970s. The difficult properties, such as susceptibility to leaf roll disease and flowering resistance, were the focus of this selection.

Growing areas

In Germany (→ viticulture in Germany ) 251 hectares (= 0.2% of the German vineyard area) were planted with the Frühburgunder grape variety in 2007. In 2006, 243 hectares of arable land were planted, after only 84 hectares were surveyed in 1999. In Germany it is mainly grown on the Ahr , in Rheinhessen , Franconia , Baden , Württemberg and the Palatinate.

Color and taste of the wine

Its color is mostly brick to dark red. Typical aromas to be found in wine are: cherry , blackberry , blackcurrant , mocha , raspberry and often smoke . As mentioned above, the taste is velvety, usually has a pleasant acidity and a full body and pleasant spiciness. It goes well with dark meat dishes or with dishes with strong sauces. Drinking temperature 16-18 degrees Celsius . Often very good shelf life (up to five years), especially if the wine has been matured in barrique barrels (up to ten years, longer in very good locations).

As a typical regional, identity-creating grape variety, the Frühburgunder has been included in the Ark of Taste by the Slow Food organization .
