history
The place name was first mentioned in 890 as "ad Calcaires" or "Kalchern", which is reminiscent of the lime kilns of that time. In the Middle Ages, Klaus belonged to the Sulzer community, which also included the towns of Zwischenwasser, Viktorsberg, Röthis, Weiler and Fraxern. The livelihoods of the villagers were cattle breeding, grain cultivation and, since the 12th century, increasingly vines. In the 18th century, potatoes and Turkish cultivation (maize) began in the Rhine Valley. At the beginning of the 20th century, the place developed from a winegrowing village to a popular holiday resort; it lies on a terrace that is open to the south and therefore has an above-average amount of sunshine .

The proportion of foreigners at the end of 2002 was 11.2%.
