history
The name "Segavio" in the oldest documentary evidence is derived from the Celtic "segos" (victory, strength, strength), as is that of the local castle name Sigberg, and denotes a fortified settlement. Sigberg means the same as the Romanesque "Montfort". It makes sense to trace this name back to the Heidenburg, the ruins of which have been determined to be partly late Roman and partly early medieval. The finds made there go back to the Early Bronze Age and point to a very old settlement soil.
In the late Roman period, the Heidenburg was of strategic importance as a refuge. A Christian cult site belonging to the 6th century was found in its area.
Göfis comes into the light of documentary tradition from the middle of the 9th century. The Rhaetian property register from approx. 842 names the royal fiefs of the hunter Bercharius and Fontejanus in Göfis.
Since the 13th century, different Montfortic ministerial families were to be found in Göfis: the Knights of Göfis since 1209 and the Knights of Sigberg. The latter persist until the 15th century. They have a larger fiefdom and some belong to the high clergy in Chur. Its headquarters are in Sigburg, which is located on the strategically important Ill crossing to Frastanz.
The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria ( Freiburg im Breisgau ). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria, then again to Austria. For Austrian province of Vorarlberg Göfis heard since its founding in 1861. The place was 1945-1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.
During the flood in 2005 , damage was caused by the water masses of the Ill in the Schildried parcel in the municipality. Because the district is located directly on the Ill, which has already overflowed its banks several times, the resettlement of the residents there was initiated. As a result, the entire area was converted into a compensation area in order to be able to absorb the river water that had passed over in the event of another flood. The cleanup work and the financial compensation of the residents were significant financial items for a community of this size.
Population development
The proportion of foreigners at the end of 2002 was 7.4%.
The population growth of the last decades is based on a positive birth balance . The migration balance is close to zero.
Culture and sights
- Sigberg Castle : The castle complex is located on a low, naturally little-protected hill in the Göfner Ried, above the Frastanzer Illbrücke. The complex has been restored since 2001 and the annual castle festival takes place on the ruins.
- Heidenburg ruins: On an elongated, partly vertically sloping mountain ridge east of the village, there are wall remains of a simple, high medieval castle complex. The remains of the masonry structure indicate that it was not built before 1100. Archaeological excavations were carried out on the entire complex between 1939 and 1941, as well as in 1945 and 1947.
- Catholic parish church Göfis hl. Luzius: The Church of St. Luzius was built in 1503 by Hans Sturn , who had previously built the Dompfarrkirche St. Nikolaus in Feldkirch. From 1970 to 1975 the church complex was extensively renovated. Inside the church there are works by the sculptor Erasmus von Kern . During excavations in the area of today's parish church, the foundation walls of a church from the 9th century - from Carolingian times - were uncovered.
- Chapel of St. Sebastian: The Sebastian chapel was consecrated in 1429.
- Glacier pot : As part of the construction work on the Ambergtunnel , a glacier pot was discovered in the municipality of Göfis.
- Gasserplatz high moor near Göfis.
