Satteins is a municipality in Austria in Vorarlberg in the Feldkirch district with 2727 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Satteins is located in the westernmost state of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the Walgau , at 496 meters above sea level at the foot of the Walserkamm . 45.2% of the area is forested. There are no other cadastral communities in Satteins.

history

The Habsburgs ruled the places in today's Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria . From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to the Austrian Empire .

The municipality of Satteins was already populated before the birth of Christ due to its geographical and climatic location. Some finds suggest that the settlement on the Vatlära dates from the Urnfield Period (1200–800 BC).

A Roman country house, a porticus villa, stood on the former Roman road that led through Satteins. Discovered in 1920, the building was built in the first century AD and destroyed by the Alemanni in the third century.

The name of Satteins is first mentioned in the Rhaetian land register as Sataginis around the year 843 . This designation is derived from a Celtic or Illyrian name in the form of Satagines . In 1255 it was called Satains .

In the late Middle Ages, the residents of Satteins were subordinate to the Knights of Schwarzenhorn , whose masters were the Counts of Montfort in Feldkirch. The Knights of Schwarzenhorn had built a castle above the village, which was destroyed in the turmoil of the Appenzell Wars in 1405 and no longer rebuilt.

The plague first raged in Satteins around the middle of the 14th century. The second time in the years 1628 to 1630, around 200 people fell victim to the disease.

Ecclesiastically, the parish belonged to the diocese of Chur until 1808 and definitely to Brixen from 1819 , after the First World War to the Apostolic Administration Innsbruck and since 1968 to the diocese of Feldkirch .

19th century

Satteins has belonged to the Austrian Crown Land of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861. In the 19th century, Satteins changed primarily due to the village fire of February 28, 1870, in which 52 houses burned down. The settlement image has changed most since the Second World War. The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955. Between 1945 and 1991 the resident population doubled and the size of the settlement area tripled. In earlier centuries there lived a purely rural population in Satteins, whereby viticulture also played a relatively large role until the end of the last century.

Since there are no major job offers in Satteins, many Satteins are forced to look for work abroad. A particularly large number of people who have to commute abroad have their job in the Principality of Liechtenstein . In Satteins there are also some facilities of the district Jagdberg, to which the communities Satteins, Schlins, Röns, Schnifis, Düns and Dünserberg belong.

At the beginning of the 1970s the secondary school was built in Satteins, which is attended by around 400 students from the Jagdberg communities and the community of Göfis. The wastewater treatment plant of the Walgau Region Wastewater Association has been in operation in Satteins since 1985.

Since the primary school was built in 1908, the municipal office has been housed in its premises. In October 1998 the municipal administration was able to move into the newly built administrative premises in the former Schäfle inn. In 1997/98 a supraregional retirement and nursing home was built, which offers a home for around 35 elderly people in need of care.

Population development

The proportion of foreigners at the end of 2002 was 6.2 percent.

While the migration balance was still negative from 1981 to 1991 (−48), since then both the migration balance and the birth balance have been positive.
