Koblach is a municipality in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg with 4718 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The municipality is located in the southern part of the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley in the Feldkirch district between the Kummenberg and the Rhine , which at this point also forms the border between Austria and Switzerland .
geography
Koblach is located in the westernmost state of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the Feldkirch district at an average altitude of 456 meters. Koblach's location on the Kummenberg , a dominant Inselberg in the middle of the Rhine Valley, is particularly striking . The five districts of the municipality of Koblach are Au, Dürne, Straßenhäuser, Neuburg and Udelberg.
Neighboring communities
Koblach shares a municipal border with seven other municipalities, six of which, like Koblach, are Austrian municipalities in the Feldkirch district . The Austrian neighboring communities of Koblach are the community of Mäder , the market community of Götzis , the communities of Klaus and Röthis , the market community of Rankweil and the community of Meiningen . On the western side of the Rhine , Koblach also borders the municipality of Oberriet in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .
history
Already in the Mesolithic, about 7000 years ago, there were settlements in the municipality. In 1952, human remains from the Mesolithic Age (around 7500 BC) were discovered at the foot of the Kummenberg .
In the Middle Ages Koblach was a royal court of the Guelphs - based on the Neuburg . In 1363, Hugo von Tumb sold the Neuburg castle and dominion to the Dukes of Austria - right in the territory of the Montfort family. At the end of January 1445, the battle near Koblach took place in the context of the Old Zurich War in front of the Neuburg .
Koblach became its own parish in 1675. From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria, then again to Austria. The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau) - they took over the pledge in 1852. Koblach has belonged to the Austrian state of Vorarlberg since it was founded in 1861. In 1888, many buildings and large areas of the municipality were destroyed when the Rhine was flooded. The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955.
Population development
The proportion of foreigners at the end of 2002 was 6.8%.
The population growth in the last few decades is so strong that both the birth balance and the migration balance are positive.
