Übersaxen is a municipality in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg with 621 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Übersaxen is located in the westernmost state of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the Feldkirch district at an altitude of 899 meters. The community is mainly located on the southern slope of the Laternsertal ( Walserkamm ) at its confluence with the Alpine Rhine Valley above the market town of Rankweil . 51.4% of the community area of ​​Übersaxen is forested. There are no other cadastral communities in Übersaxen.

history

The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and Upper Austria (Freiburg im Breisgau). From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria, then again to Austria. For Austrian province of Vorarlberg belongs Übersaxen since its founding in 1861. The place was from 1945 to 1955 part of the French zone of occupation in Austria.

    Art project “Gisalz 98”: For “Gisalz 98” in Übersaxen, the Vorarlberg artist Herbert Fritsch made use of the house symbols of the Walsers, which have been handed down since the Middle Ages . coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms was created in 1969 based on a design by the Schruns artist and heraldist Konrad Honold . It shows a golden radiant sun in red over a silver Dreispitzberg.
