Altach is a municipality in Austria in Vorarlberg in the Feldkirch district with 6,769 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). Because of its small area, it is the second most densely populated municipality in Vorarlberg with a population density of 1263 inhabitants / km².

Altach is located in the westernmost state of Austria, Vorarlberg, in the Feldkirch district at an altitude of 412 meters.

There is only the Altach cadastral community.
Neighboring communities
The municipality borders three Austrian and two Swiss municipalities. These are the town of Hohenems , which belongs to the Dornbirn district , the market town of Götzis and the community of Mäder , which are also in the Feldkirch district, and the towns of Oberriet and Diepoldsau, which belong to the canton of St. Gallen .
history
The Habsburgs ruled the places in Vorarlberg alternately from Tyrol and from Upper Austria (seat: Freiburg im Breisgau ). On January 1, 1801, Altach was politically separated from the neighboring town of Götzis. From 1805 to 1814 the place belonged to Bavaria , then again to Austria. Altach has belonged to the state of Vorarlberg since the establishment of the Vorarlberg state parliament in 1861. The place was part of the French occupation zone in Austria from 1945 to 1955 .
On December 1, 2019, 62.47% of almost 2,700 voters from around 5,200 eligible voters voted for the opening of a new gravel mining area near Sauwinkel in the village. The company Kopf Kies und Beton GmbH is running out of gravel in a neighboring pit, Mayor Gottfried Brändle (ÖVP) and the majority of the community representatives pleaded for the opening of a new pit with an expected extraction time of around 35 years - also around Vorarlberg briefly with gravel and To supply sand - and the construction of a motorway connection via the Altach motorway service station for the expected heavy traffic. A citizens 'initiative around the Altach citizens' list with parliamentary group chairman and member of the state parliament of the Greens, Bernhard Weber , had collected 1,165 signatures for a referendum and campaigned against the removal of gravel, arguing that the old Rhine recreational area would be impaired and heavy traffic would arise.
Population development
At the end of 2016, the proportion of foreigners in the municipality was 13.4 percent.
Since both the birth balance and the migration balance have been positive for decades , the population is growing rapidly.

In 2003 there were 150 commercial businesses with 955 employees and 106 apprentices, a total of 2454 employees subject to wage tax were counted.

The Altach stop is on the Lindau – Bludenz railway line , with S1 trains to Lindau and Bludenz stopping there . Furthermore, the bus lines 2a and 2b of the Götzis city transport go through the town of Altach.
education
There are four kindergartens in Altach. There are also three schools on site: elementary school, secondary school and the free Montessori school (formerly private elementary school). The music school "tonart" also teaches its students in part in the Altach community. In January 2003 there were 720 students on site.
Sports
The SCR Altach is a football club that by winning the second-class First League 2014 in the Austrian Bundesliga uprising, in which he had previously already played for three seasons until relegation in 2008/09.
In December 2017, the Altach New Year's Eve run was held for the 20th time. With over 2000 participants, it is one of the largest running events in Vorarlberg and also the second largest New Year's Eve run in Austria.
