Karlheinz Kopf (born June 27, 1957 in Hohenems ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and member of the Austrian National Council . From October 2013 to November 2017 he was Second President of the Austrian National Council . He has been Secretary General of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO) since 2018 .

education and profession

Karlheinz Kopf was born on June 27, 1957 in Hohenems. He comes from an entrepreneurial family in Altach and attended elementary school there from 1963 to 1967. From 1967 to 1972 he completed the lower level at the private high school Mehrerau in Bregenz and then from 1972 to 1975 the commercial school in Bregenz . In 1975 and 1976, Karlheinz Kopf completed his military service .

In 1976 he first started working as an assistant to the management at the Huber Trikot textile company in Götzis . In 1982 he was appointed HR manager and authorized signatory there. In 1991, Kopf moved to Wolford AG in Bregenz, also as head of the HR department and authorized signatory . In 1993, after three years, Kopf joined his wife's family business, Sportbau Walser GmbH , based in Altach, as managing director . From 2000 to 2008 he was also general secretary of the ÖVP- Wirtschaftsbund . At the international level he was active as a member of the executive committee of the SME UNION from 2003 to 2008 , from 2009 to 2010 he was its co-president. From 2001 to January 2009, Karlheinz Kopf was deputy chairman of the social insurance institute for commercial enterprises (SVA) and deputy chairman of the sponsors' conference in the main association of Austrian social security agencies . Since June 2018 he has been deputy chairman of the SVA again.

Since June 28, 2014, Karlheinz Kopf has been working in a second job as managing director of Sportbau Walser GmbH in addition to his political activities .

On July 1, 2018, he succeeded Anna-Maria Hochhauser as Secretary General of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO).

Political career

Karlheinz Kopf became politically active for the first time at the municipal level. From 1985 to 1999 he was a member of the Altach community council . Since 1994 the economic politician Kopf has been a member of the Austrian National Council under the direct mandate of the regional constituency of Vorarlberg Süd . In the National Council he was media spokesman for the ÖVP from 2008 to 2013. From 2000 until his election as club chairman of the ÖVP, he was Secretary General of the ÖVP- Wirtschaftsbund .

On November 25, 2008, he took over the role of club chairman from Josef Pröll , as he moved to the new federal government as vice chancellor and finance minister. At the special party conference of the ÖVP on November 28, 2008 Kopf was also elected deputy to ÖVP chairman Josef Pröll and held this office until the end of Josef Pröll's chairmanship in April 2011. At the inauguration of the XXV. National Council on October 29, 2013 Karlheinz Kopf was elected Second National Council President. At the same time he passed on the role of club chairman of the ÖVP parliamentary group in the National Council to Reinhold Lopatka .

From July 1 to August 2, 2014, Kopf initially represented the President of the National Council, Barbara Prammer, in his role as second President of the National Council and, after her death, from August 2 to September 2, 2014, was the interim president of the National Council. From July 8, 2016 to January 26, 2017, he led the official business of the Austrian Federal President on an interim basis together with Doris Bures and Norbert Hofer as part of the National Council Presidents' College .

In the National Council election held on October 15, 2017 , Karlheinz Kopf was able to obtain a basic mandate in the regional constituency of Vorarlberg Süd after 2008 and thus move back into the National Council. In the constituent session of the National Council of the XXVI. In the legislative period on November 9, 2017, however, his party, which was now the parliamentary group with the largest number of votes, did not propose him for the office of President of the National Council. Instead, Elisabeth Köstinger was elected to represent the ÖVP in the Presidium of the National Council. In the 2019 National Council election , Kopf was re-elected as a member of the Vorarlberg Süd regional constituency.

Activity as a football official

Karlheinz Kopf's big hobby is soccer. Present on the field even during his active time as a goalkeeper, later as a functionary he was particularly interested in the next generation. With the establishment of the Schnabelholz stadium (1991), the Mehrerau junior academy (2000) and the youth concept of the Austrian Football Association, he left a lasting mark.

From 2016 Kopf was President of the Bundesliga soccer club SCR Altach . He resigned from office on March 22, 2019 and was elected Honorary President. Before that, he was its chairman of the supervisory board from 2009 to 2016 and chairman or president from 1985 to 1995. From 1998 to 2006 he was President of the Vorarlberg Football Association (VFV) and at the same time sports advisor in the Austrian Football Association. Head had to give up his functions in the VFV and the ÖFB in the spring of 2006 due to time constraints.

family

Karlheinz Kopf has been married since 1978. His wife Karin, the sister of the green politician Harald Walser , also comes from an Altach entrepreneurial family and is now a partner in the joint sports facility construction company. They have two daughters.
