Friedrich Hillegeist (born February 21, 1895 in Vienna , † December 3, 1973 in Vienna) was an Austrian politician.

Life

After attending the commercial academy , Hillegeist worked from 1913 to 1929 as a commercial clerk at Siemens-Schuckertwerke in Vienna. From 1929 he was secretary of the Federation of Industrial Employees Austria. He wrote poetry and in 1933 became a member of the Association of Socialist Writers . From 1934 he was an advertiser for small life insurances at the insurance company Phönix. During the National Socialist era , he was imprisoned for 14 months, including from September 1, 1939 to the end of April 1940 in Buchenwald concentration camp .

After the end of the war, Hillegeist got involved again in the trade union movement: from 1945 to 1963 he was chairman of the salaried employees' union in the private sector, in 1948 he became chairman of the salaried insurance company, in 1955 president of the International Confederation of Private Employees, in 1959 vice president of the Austrian trade union confederation and president of the main association of the Austrian Federation Social security agencies . From 1962 he was honorary chairman of the ÖGB .

From 1945 to 1962 he was a member of the National Council , from 1961 to 1962 he was the second president of the National Council .

In the 2nd district of Vienna , the street in which the main office of the pension insurance company is located is named after him. Also named after him is the street of the rehabilitation center in Hochegg (Grimmenstein municipality) belonging to the pension insurance institution.
