The Bludenz train station is the train station of the Austrian town of Bludenz in Vorarlberg and is located 558  m above sea level. A. The railway junction links the Arlbergbahn with the Lindau – Bludenz and Bludenz – Schruns railway lines , while the joint station is operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and the private Montafonerbahn (MBS).

location

The address of the train station is Bahnhofplatz 3. The route of the Arlbergbahn lies, like the Ill flowing past Bludenz and all main traffic axes, in a north-west-south-east direction south-west of the city. The reception building is on the northeast side of the tracks, facing the city center. The freight yard is on the opposite side (southwest) . The Hämmerle container terminal is connected to the train station in the north-west.

history

The Bludenzer Bahnhof was opened on July 1, 1872 by the private Vorarlberger Bahn as the terminus of the line coming from Lindau . As a result of the opening of the Arlbergbahn on September 21, 1884, it gained in importance, not least due to the pushing operation on the mountain railway , and became a through station . In addition, it was temporarily a joint station with the Imperial and Royal State Railways before they also took over the Vorarlberger Bahn in 1885. The situation of the community station arose again from December 18, 1905, when the railway junction was completed by opening the line to Schruns . At the same time, electrical operation began in the station, before Bludenz became a system changing station with the electrification of the Arlbergbahn on May 14, 1925 . This circumstance caused considerable operational problems for the direct current operated Montafonerbahn, because its locomotives could no longer drive into the station on their own. For almost 47 years, the company had to make do with a two-engine locomotive , auxiliary combustion engines on the railcars and later also pure combustion railcars . This situation persisted until March 6, 1972, when the Montafonerbahn switched its route to the AC operation that is common with the ÖBB.

Railway area

Bludenz has unusually extensive railway facilities. The railway area covers an area of around 200 hectares . For passenger traffic, there are two more island platforms with four tracks in addition to the house platform . Their usable length is about 465 m. In addition, there is a stump track each from the northwest and southeast . A through track runs through the middle of the railway area.

Eight sidings are provided for freight traffic . In the north-west corner , several tracks for locomotives and railcars have been set up from Bregenz since the introduction of a second mainline track, which was only completed in 1995 . A tunnel fire engine is also stationed there. To the south of it there is a new train conveyor with ten tracks.

A new training workshop for 101 ÖBB apprentices is being built in the south-eastern area of the station, next to the road bridge over the railway facilities. This is to be in operation from summer 2020 and will gradually replace the previous facility located in Feldkirch .

The basic structure of today's reception building dates back to 1872. At that time, like the original counterpart of the Dornbirn train station , it consisted of a single-storey building parallel to the track with a cross-axis upper floor in the middle. With the opening of the Arlbergbahn, the station gained in importance, and its entire area was later increased. The middle transverse building was later given a gable roof. The three transverse buildings are side by side on the eaves . The current hipped roof was created after 1985 , and the roof of a north-western extension was adapted to the shape of the three roofs on the transverse buildings, which stand on the area of the building from 1872. In 2015, the building was painted in the color " ÖBB-Red ".

In addition to the typical train station facilities, such as the dispatcher and rooms for the shunting staff, the building also houses offices and a canteen for railway employees. In the small waiting hall there are three counters at which the “Mobilpunkt Bludenz”, a customer office of the Vorarlberg transport association , is set up together with the ÖBB ticket sales .

The stump track of platform 11, mostly used by the Montafonerbahn, at the rear of the Rätikon-Center.

Along the length of this transverse building, between the main platform and the forecourt, there is a generous steel / glass construction of more recent date, which covers the main entrance and the stairs to the platform underpass, as well as an elevator.

The "Rätikoncenter", an elongated, two- to three-story building from the 1990s, adjoins the roof to the southeast. This is also located between the house platform and the station forecourt. In its southeastern part it is shallow because of the stump track of platform 11. It houses a drugstore, a tobacco shop, a bakery with a self-service café, doctor's offices, the AMS and, since summer 2018, a sushi restaurant.

To the north-west of the reception building, there are additional buildings to accommodate railway equipment, offices, etc.

All four sections together form a closed, approx. 300 m long building front between the house platform and the station forecourt, which in addition to the main entrance offers two further passages between the house platform and the station forecourt. The platform tunnel crosses the entire railway site and enables access to the Mokry district and the banks of the Ill.

Surroundings

After twelve years of discussion, the Bludenz City Council decided on September 26, 2008 to redesign the station forecourt. In connection with an extensive relocation of state road 190, through and motorized individual traffic is to largely disappear from there. In a first step, two new Chamber of Labor buildings were erected opposite the Rätikoncenter.

train

The station is served by long-distance and regional trains. Up until 2015, Railjet trains Vienna Westbahnhof  - Feldkirch ran every two hours , which were then tied through to Bregenz or Zurich HB . Since then, Railjet trains have been running almost every hour from Vienna to Feldkirch, from where they continue to either Zurich or Bregenz. There is also a daily pair of Railjet trains from Zurich to Budapest-Keleti. There is also a pair of InterCity trains to Dortmund and Innsbruck, as well as the “Transalpin” that runs between Zurich and Graz. Night trains run to Zurich, Bregenz, Vienna, Budapest, Graz, Zagreb and Belgrade. There is also a daily night train through car to Prague. Regional express trains run in the direction of Lindau and Schruns, and the S1 (Bludenz – Lindau, ÖBB) and S4 (Bludenz – Schruns, MBS) of the Vorarlberg S-Bahn start here.
