Traction (rail vehicle)
Traction (of lat. Trahere "drag, drag and drop") designated at tracks the powered movement to and from railway vehicles .
A distinction is made between traction according to the drive of the vehicles :
- Steam traction, see steam locomotive or steam railcar
- Diesel traction, see diesel locomotive and combustion engine
- Electric traction (often also referred to as "E-traction"), see electric locomotive , electric multiple unit
The joint control of several locomotives from one driver's cab is called multiple traction .
The general change in operations, especially from steam traction to diesel or electric traction , is called the traction change .
