When it opened on December 18, 1905, the 12.8 kilometer long Bludenz – Schruns railway opened up the Montafon. With the Bludenz-Schruns line, one of the first electrically operated standard-gauge local railways in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy went into operation.

In the 1990s, the company was also integrated into the Vorarlberg transport association (VVV). Since 2005 there has also been a close cooperation between MBS and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Since then, MBS railcars have also been operating on commissioned ÖBB routes, and ÖBB sets are used on the MBS route as part of a kilometer compensation for these services.
