At the age of 17 he already showed very good performances for his age, because he sensationally won over the Turkish champion Reşit Karabacak and was only defeated on points to the experienced Emilian Christian from Romania and Alexandar Nanew from Bulgaria . He came to the 9th rank in welterweight.

He then took part again in the European Championships in 1979 in Bucharest , but had to admit defeat there, meanwhile grown into the middleweight division, the Hungarian world class wrestler István Kovács and the multiple German world champion Adolf Seger .

1980 was the big year in Günter Busarello's career. He first won the European Junior Championship (Espoirs) in Bursa behind the Soviet athlete Iwan Purchin, the European Middleweight Championship and then he won the European Middleweight Championship bronze medal at the European Championship in Prievidza . He won again over Reşit Karabacak, then won over Adolf Seger, who had to give up against him due to an injury, but then also beat the strong wrestlers from the Eastern Bloc Lajos Nagy from Hungary and Vasile Tiganas from Romania. At the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 he won over Mohammad Eloulabi from Syria and lost to István Kovács and the multiple world and European champion Ismail Abilow from Bulgaria and finished in 7th place.

In the following years Günter Busarello won no more medals at international championships. In 1984 Günter Busarello started in Los Angeles for the second time at the Olympic Games. There he defeated the Finn Jouni Ilomäki, but then lost to Reiner Trik from Germany and Hideyuki Nagashima from Japan and finished in 11th place.

After the Olympic Games in 1984, Günter Busarello, who knew about his heart disease in order not to take any further risk to his health, ended his career as an active wrestler. He was still active as a youth coach in his club KSK Klaus. He died of heart failure on November 8, 1985 at the age of 25.

His son Bernd followed in his footsteps many years later and also became Austrian champion in wrestling.
