Alexandar Nanew
Alexandar Nanew (born November 9, 1958 ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler . He was European champion in 1986 and 1987 in free style middleweight.
Career
Alexandar Nanew began at the age of 14 years in 1972 with the rings . After initial successes in the junior sector and joining the army, he became a member of the Central Sports Club of the Army (CSKA) Sofia , where coach Jantscho Patrikow trained him to become an excellent freestyle wrestler. Even as a junior he was one of the European elite freestyle wrestlers and took 3rd place in the welterweight division at the European Junior Championships in Poznań in 1976.
Alexandar Nanew also made the transition from junior to senior level seamlessly, as he immediately won the silver medal at the 1977 World Championships in Lausanne at the age of nineteen . He won over Stanley Dziedzic from the USA on points and was defeated by Mansoor Barzegar from Iran on points, who in turn lost to Dziedzic. In the final statement, Dziedzic had the best point ratio of these three wrestlers and won ahead of Nanew and Barzegar.
In 1978, Alexandar Nanew came 4th at the World Cup after losing to Peter Marta from the USSR and Leroy Kemp from the USA. He then won a medal again at the 1979 European Championships in Bucharest , namely the bronze one. At this championship he also defeated the German top wrestler Martin Knosp from Urloffen .
In 1980 he came at the European Championships in Prievidza only on the 5th place and was not nominated by the Bulgarian Wrestling Association for the Olympic Games in Moscow . From Bulgaria started in Moscow in the welterweight Valentin Rajtschew , who promptly became Olympic champion there. Alexandar Nanew was used again at the world championships in 1982 and 1983 and at the European championship in 1983 in the welterweight division, but could not occupy any top positions there.
From 1985 he was then one weight class higher, in the middleweight division. Relieved of the burden of training, he then achieved one success after another in the years up to 1988. First he was runner- up in 1985 in Budapest behind Mark Schultz from the USA, then he won the 1986 European championship in Athens and again the runner-up world championship in Budapest. In 1987 he became European champion again in Tampere and again vice world champion in Seoul . Alexandar Nanew finished his career with a 3rd place at the 1988 European Championships in Manchester . The reasons why he did not compete in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul are not known.
After finishing his active wrestling career, Alexandar Nanew moved to the coaching office.
