Necmi Gençalp

Necmi Gençalp (born January 1, 1960 in Yozgat ) is a former Turkish wrestler .

Career

Necmi Gençalp comes from Yozgat and started wrestling there in 1975. After initial success in the national field, he moved to the sports club "Seker" Ankara . As early as 1979 he started at the Balkan Games in Yambol / Bulgaria and came there on a good 2nd place in the free style in welterweight. In the junior area, Necmi also tried Greco-Roman. Style and came in 4th place in the welterweight division at the European Junior Championships in 1980 in Bursa :

In 1980 and 1981 Necmi was used by the Turkish Wrestling Association at an international championship, but could not assert himself in the front field. From 1983 to 1986 Necmi often had to struggle with injuries and therefore could not achieve any particular success. From 1987 to 1990, however, came the best years for Necmi Gençalp, which culminated in winning the Olympic silver medal in 1988 in Seoul in the middleweight division. Necmi lost in the final fight against the local wrestler Han Hyung-woo, who was driven by the fanatical South Korean crowd. Necmi proved that this success was not a flash in the pan in 1989 when he also became vice European champion. In the final, he wrestled against the experienced Czech Jozef Lohyňa . Both wrestlers could not score until the end of the fight. The jury then disqualified both wrestlers for being passive and did not award a gold medal.

In 1991 Necmi Gençalp ended his international wrestling career. He is now a trainer in Yozgat.
