Career

Leroy began wrestling as a teenager at Hich School in Chardon , Ohio . He was soon very successful and was the 1974 American junior lightweight champion in free style. At the University of Wisconsin – Madison , which he attended after high school, he continued to develop and was 1976, 1977 and 1978 American student welterweight champion, after he had finished second in 1975. From 1979 to 1983 Leroy was five times in a row American champion of the AAU (Amateur Athletes Union).

1978 Lee first represented the US colors at an international championship. At the World Cup in Mexico City , he immediately won the welterweight title with five wins. In the final he defeated the experienced Bulgarian champion Alexandar Nanew safely on points.

Also in 1979 Lee won the world title. In San Diego he defeated the German newcomer Martin Knosp in the final just on points. At the 1981 World Cup in Skopje Lee tried to win his third world title. But this time he lost in the pool final against Martin Knosp on points and was only able to fight for the bronze medal against the second pool of the other pool, the Korean Ko Ti-Won . He won this fight safely on points.

In 1982 Lee Kemp won his third world title in Edmonton / Canada . He met Martin Knosp in his third pool fight and won 1-0 on points. Knosp then had to retire, while Lee also gave the Czech Dan Karabín no chance in the final battle .

In 1983 Lee Kemp was replaced by Dave Schultz in the United States and thus internationally . By the time he retired in 1984, he had contested 435 fights, of which he won 400. The coaches he owed the most to were Duane Kleven, Stan Dziedzic , Russell Hellickson and Dan Gable .

After his active time, Lee Kempf worked for years as a trainer at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and is now an independent businessman in the automotive industry. After he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1990, he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame in August 2008 .
