Chardon is a city in the northeast of the US state of Ohio , about 50 kilometers east of Cleveland . Gallipolis is in County Geauga , the administrative seat of which is the city. In the 2000 census , the place had just under 5200 inhabitants.
There are two listed districts in Chardon . In 1974 the historic center was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as the Chardon Courthouse Square District , followed by the Fowler's Mills Historic District in 2002 .
history
The city was founded in 1808 as the administrative seat for County Geauga in the middle of a wooded area on a hill. The land for the place belonged to Peter Chardon Brooks (1767–1849), a very wealthy New England businessman , who donated it on the condition that the city bear his name. In 1810, Chardon (French for thistles ) was named after him. On July 24, 1868, the city center was destroyed in a great fire.
On February 27, 2012, a student was killed and five others injured in a school rampage at Chardon High School. Two other victims later died from their injuries. The alleged perpetrator was arrested shortly after the crime. On March 19, 2013, the murderer TJ Lane was sentenced to three life sentences with no pardon.
economy
In the 20th century, companies in the metalworking and chemical industries settled in Chardon. Important companies in the area are Pentair Water , which in 1999 acquired Essef , a company founded in 1954 . formerly Structural Fibers . In Chardon, Pentair produces systems and parts for water treatment as well as pressure tanks made of GRP . The company Metal Coatings International (formerly Diamond Shamrock Corporation ) produces chemicals for corrosion protection and metal coating and is headquartered in Chardon. De Nora Tech (formerly Eltech Systems Corporation ) makes carbon fiber and graphite products in Chardon .
Northern Ohio was particularly hard hit by the decline of the manufacturing industry in the Midwest . Between 2001 and 2008, Chardon lost more than 800 jobs to mass layoffs and factory closures, including the Chardon Giant Eagle and Creative Engineered Polymer Products (formerly a division of Carlisle Engineered Products ) factories in 2006 , with 160 jobs being lost each.
Personalities
The politician and general Halbert E. Paine was born in Chardon in 1826 .
The singer Erin Mauer is made of chardon.
