Alcide Legrand (born February 17, 1962 in Bergerac , Dordogne ) is a former French wrestler . He won a bronze medal in free style middleweight at the 1989 World Championships .

Career

Alcide Legrand began wrestling as a teenager in 1973, focusing on free style. In 1980 he was French junior champion in the age group "Juniors" and in 1982 in the age group "Espoirs". He then moved to Paris, got a job with the municipal transport company and became a member of the VS Metro Paris sports club . Gerard Santoro became his most important coach in those years . As an adult, Alcide Legrand was 1.77 meters tall and first in the welterweight division and from 1986 in the middleweight division.

In 1980 he took part in the Junior World Championship (Juniors) in Colorado Springs. In the weight class up to 70 kg he won a bronze medal. International championships in the youth field were still in their early stages, but this championship, in which only a few nations participated, was an official championship of the World Wrestling Federation (FILA).

In 1982 Alcide Legrand was the first French champion in the welterweight division. He won this title a total of thirteen times by 1998. He took part in 15 French championships and was only able to win the title in 1985, when he was third in the middleweight division and in 1997, when he was second in the middleweight division.

With the seniors he started in 1983 for the first time at an international championship. He finished 2nd in the welterweight championship of the European Union in Annecy behind the German Stefan Badusch. In the following years he achieved good to very good results at many world and European championships. However, he only managed to get into the medal ranks once: at the 1989 World Cup in Martigny, Switzerland. He finished there in the middleweight division behind Elmadi Dschabrailow from the Soviet Union and Melvin Douglas from the United States, but before such outstanding wrestlers as Necmi Gençalp from Turkey and Jozef Lohyňa from the CSSR in 3rd place and thus won a bronze medal at the World Championships.

With a good 6th place at the 1991 World Cup in Varna, Alcide Legrand qualified for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. In Barcelona he lost his first fight against Jozef Lohyna, then defeated Roberto Neves from Brazil and had to admit defeat to Romanian Nicolae Ghita with 2: 3 points in his third fight . He was eliminated and came in 11th place.

In 1993 he came in at the Mediterranean Games in Languedoc-Roussillon behind Sebahattin Öztürk on the 2nd place. He then started at various World and European Championships until 1997, but could no longer place himself in the front field.
