Career

Aljaksandr Sauko started wrestling at the age of seven. He became a member of a wrestling club in Hrodna and developed into an excellent freestyle wrestler with coach Uladsimir Warankou. With a height of only 1.67 m, he started in the middleweight division and weighed around 85 kg. As a stocky, extremely powerful guy, he was very difficult to wrestle. As a junior, he had some notable successes. In 1986 he won a junior world cup tournament in the Canadian St. John’s middleweight division and in 1987 he became junior middleweight world champion in Burnaby .

Aljaksandr Sauko had to wait until 1993 because of the extremely strong competition in what was then the Soviet Union before he was used at an international championship in the seniors . He was only able to start for this country when Belarus had become independent.

At the European Championships in 1993 in Istanbul , he threw the German champion Hans Gstöttner from Halle out of the race and won the bronze medal in the middleweight division. At the World Championships in Toronto in the same year, Alexander won again in the first round over Hans Gstöttner, but had to retire after a defeat in the second round.

At the European Championships in Rome in 1994 , Sauko met Hans Gstöttner for the third time in the battle for the bronze medal and this time had to admit defeat to him with 1: 3 points and be satisfied with 4th place.

After this European championship, Aljaksandr Sauko did not win any medals at international championships. The best result he still achieved was 6th place at the 1996 European Championships in Budapest . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he lost to Leslie Gutches from the USA and Mogamed Ibragimov from Azerbaijan and was eliminated after the 2nd round.

After 1996, Aljaksandr Sauko turned to submission wrestling , which is fought until the decision. He fought for the Abu Dhabi Combat Club .
