Sebahattin Öztürk

Sebahattin Öztürk (born January 6, 1969 ) is a former Turkish wrestler . He became world champion in 1993 and European middleweight champion in free style in 1992 .

Career

Sebahattin Öztürk comes from Sivas and started wrestling there as a teenager. He concentrated on the free style and initially belonged to a wrestling club in Sivas. Later he moved to the large association TEDAS Ankara . He was trained mainly by Riza Keser and Yakup Topuz. With a height of "only" 1.72 meters, the strong athlete always competed in the middleweight division. Sebahattin Öztürk studied sport. He is married and has three children. After the end of his wrestling career, he ran a sports studio in Sivas. In 2011 he was sentenced by a Turkish court to a prison term of 13 years and 4 months for various serious offenses.

His sporting career began in 1988 when he took part in the European Junior Championships (Espoirs age group) in Walbrzych. In the middleweight division, he finished 2nd behind Rustem Kelekschajew from the Soviet Union. A year later he won the world title in Ulan Bator in the same age group and weight class, ahead of Abbas Jadidi from Iran and Nicolae Ghita from Romania.

In 1990 he started at a senior championship for the first time. He won it at the European Championships in Poznań in the middleweight division behind Hans Gstöttner from the GDR and Elmadi Dschabrailow from the Soviet Union an EM bronze medal. At the Goodwill Games in Seattle in 1990, he came in second behind Elmadi Jabrailow and ahead of the American Royce Alger . No medal, but a good 5th place at the World Championships this year in Tokyo. Surprisingly, the Czech Jozef Lohyňa won the title there ahead of Royce Alger.

1991 Sebahattin Öztürk won at the European Championships in Stuttgart in the middleweight division behind Elmadi Dschabrailow and Hans Gstöttner again a European Championship bronze medal. Shortly afterwards he won the Mediterranean Games in Athens in front of Alcide Legrand from France and in the Military World Cup in Istanbul in front of the German Christian Weinert. He also won a medal, the bronze, at the 1991 World Cup in Varna. Only Kevin Jackson from the United States and Jozef Lohyna placed in front of him.

In 1992 Sebahattin Öztürk won his first title at an international championship. He was European champion in Kaposvár / Hungary ahead of Laszlo Dvorak , Hungary and Rustem Kelechsajew. At the Olympic Games in Barcelona, ​​in which he also took part, he naturally hoped to win a medal. He started there with a defeat against the reigning world champion Kevin Jackson. This was followed by victories over Nergüin Tümennast , Mongolia and Francisco Iglesias, Spain. Further defeats against Rasoul Khadem Azghadi, Iran and Jozef Lohyna threw him back to 6th place.

He was very successful in 1993. First he was in Istanbul behind Rustem Kazbekowitsch Kelechayev , who now started for Russia, Vice European Champion and then he won this year at the World Cup in Toronto before Sagid Katinowassow from Russia, Ruslan Kinchagow from Uzbekistan and Kevin Jackson. This world title was the greatest success in his wrestling career. At the World Cup in Istanbul in 1994 he won a. a. over Hans Gstöttner with 3: 1 points, but lost in the final against the surprise man Luchman Dschabrailow , a Dagestani starting for Moldova, with 2: 4 points and could not defend his world title. But winning the World Cup silver medal was a great success.

In 1995 Sebahattin only came 6th at the World Championships in Atlanta. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta, however, he again delivered great fights, but narrowly missed the medals with a 4th place. He lost in Atlanta in his first fight against Ruslan Kinchagow with 2: 3 points. Then he defeated Luis Varela, Venezuela, Hidekazu Yokoyama, Japan, the reigning world champion Luchman Jabrailow (with 5: 1 points), Wilson Ariel Ramos, Cuba and came to a non-fighting victory over the injured Elmadi Jabrailow. In the decisive battle for a bronze medal, however, he had to admit defeat against Amir Reza Khadem Azghadi.

Sebahattin Öztürk tried to continue his career in 1997 and 1998, but was repeatedly thrown back by lengthy injuries that did not allow him to start again at international championships. After the end of his career as a wrestler, the unfortunate events occurred that gave his life a striking turn.
