Royce Alger

Royce Alger (born March 6, 1965 ) is a retired American wrestler . He was runner- up in free style middleweight world champion in 1990 .

Career

Royce Alger began wrestling as a teenager, concentrating entirely on the free style. He was twice an Iowa Master during his high school years . He was trained by Brad Smith at the time. After moving to the University of Iowa in 1984, he was mainly active as a student wrestler. He denied it for the wrestling club of this university, the Hawkeye WC until 1988 a total of 146 fights, of which he won 131. His coach there was the 1972 Olympic champion in Munich in the lightweight Dan Gable . In 1994 he moved to David Schultz's club , the Foxcatcer Wrestling Club .

As early as 1983, Royce Alger was American junior welterweight champion in free style. At the so-called NCAA Championships (= US American student championships) he took 5th place in the welterweight division in 1986 and won this tournament in 1987 and 1988.

He was US senior senior champion in 1990, 1992 and 1994, each in the middleweight division.

The international career of Royce Alger began in 1983, when he took second place behind the Soviet athlete Alexander Simjagin at the Junior World Championship (Juniors = age group up to 18 years of age) in Oak Lawn in the weight class up to 70 kg body weight.

In 1989 he was the first Pan American middleweight champion in front of Raul Cascaret Fonseca from Cuba . He celebrated his greatest international success in 1990 at the World Cup in Tokyo . Here he finished second in the middleweight division behind the Czechoslovak surprise winner Jozef Lohyňa, ahead of Puntsagiin Süchbat from Mongolia and the Soviet athlete Awtandil Gogolishwili.

In 1991 and 1992 he did not qualify for the World Cup or the Olympic Games in Barcelona . Both times he was relegated to 2nd place in the so-called trials (elimination tournaments) by Kevin Jackson . In 1992 he won again the title of Pan American middleweight champion in front of the Puerto Rican Jose E. Betancourt Rosario and the Canadian David Hohl.

From 1994 Royce Alger was an assistant trainer at the University of Iowa and from 1997 to 2000 he was a strength and conditioning trainer at the same university. He has been a trainer at the St. James Academy since 2001 and organizes wrestling seminars for beginners and advanced players.

From 1997 to 1999 Royce Alger also worked as a so-called mixed martial artist.
