Style, was. From 1983 to 1987 he won three medals at the US student championships in free style (NCAA Division I Collegiate Championships), with the 2nd place in 1987 in the welterweight division being his best result.
Jackson began his international wrestling career with a free style middleweight win at the Pan American Championships in Colorado Springs , to which he added a second win the next year at the Pan American Games in Havana . In 1991 he also became world middleweight champion. In the final he defeated the Czech Jozef Lohyňa just on points. In a pool fight he had previously beaten the German champion Hans Gstöttner 4-1 on points.
At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he celebrated his greatest success by winning the gold medal, but was lucky that he had the judges on his side, because according to the course of the fight his final opponent Elmadi Jabrailow from Russia could just as well have been declared the winner .
At the 1993 World Cup in Toronto , Jackson could not defend his 1991 world title. He lost in the pool final against Sebahattin Öztürk from Turkey and in the fight for 3rd place also against Ruslam Kinchagow from Uzbekistan and had to make do with 4th place.
Jackson did even worse at the 1994 World Cup in Istanbul . He was eliminated early after two defeats and only came in 11th place. In 1995 he came back in impressive style. In Atlanta he won his second world title, with his final victory over Elmadi Schabrailow this time well deserved.
In 1996 Jackson was unable to take part in the Atlanta Olympics due to injury. He therefore ended his career as an active wrestler in 1997 and worked for a short time as a professional wrestler. In 1999 he became the coach of the US national wrestling team and was also the head coach of the US Olympic team in 2004. After he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003, he was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame in September 2005 .
