Highland Falls is a village in Orange County in the US state of New York with 3,900 inhabitants (as of 2010 ). The village belongs to the city of Highlands as a parish . The Highland Falls village area is 2.9 km², 0.9% of which is water. The place is part of the United States Census Bureau defined Poughkeepsie Newburgh Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area and also belongs to the larger New York Metropolitan Area . The United States Military Academy of West Point is nearby .

Highland Falls was founded in 1906 and was formerly called Buttermilk Falls.

Demographics

The 3,678 residents of Highland Falls, found in the 2000 census , lived in 1,567 households; including 922 families. The population density was 1,279 per km². 1,657 residential units were recorded in the village. Of the population, 76.9% were White, 12.8% African American, 0.4% American Indian, 2.2% Asian, and 4.0% from other races; 3.8% said they belonged to several ethnic groups.

Of the 1,567 households, 28.9% had children under the age of 18; 42.6% were married couples living together. 35.6% of the households were single households. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.13.

The population was divided into 24.0% under 18 years of age, 7.1% from 18 to 24 years of age, 30.6% from 25 to 44 years of age, 22.6% from 45 to 64 years of age and 15.7% from 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years.

The median household income was $ 45,833 and the median family income was $ 57,885. The per capita income in Highland Falls was $ 24,100. 4.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.
