Stanley Vivian Bacon (born August 13, 1885 in Camberwell , † October 13, 1952 in Streatham ) was a British wrestler and Olympic champion at the 1908 Summer Olympics in free style middleweight.

Career

Stanley Vivian Bacon comes from the south of England. He began wrestling as a teenager in the free style customary in England at the time . Stanley won eight times the British championship from light to heavyweight in the period from 1910 to 1925.

In 1908 he qualified for the Olympic Games in London . There he started in the free style in the middleweight division and won the gold medal with four wins . In the final battle, Stanley defeated his compatriot George de Relwyskow , who had previously won the gold medal in the lightweight. In 1911 Stanley is said to have also won the Festival of Empire in London, a forerunner of the Commonwealth Games .

At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 Stanley had to wear the Greco-Roman. Start style because there were no free style competitions. He did not get along in this style and retired from the middleweight class, which was very strong with 37 wrestlers, after two defeats.

Finally, at the age of 35, Stanley also started at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. He was able to compete here again in free style, but retired after a defeat and was placed on 11th place.

Stanley Vivian Bacon also worked as a wrestling trainer for the scouts from around 1910. One of his best students was Stanley Bissell, who was one of the best English freestyle wrestlers in the 1930s.
