Cael Norman Sanderson (born June 20, 1979 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) is a retired American wrestler .

Career

Cael Sanderson began wrestling with his three brothers at Wasatch High School in Heber , Utah. He was trained there by his father Steve. In 1997 he began studying at Iowa State University and became a very successful freestyle wrestler in college. He won several NCAA championships at the state and federal levels. His record in these fights was 159-0.

On the international wrestling mat he made his debut at the Junior World Championships (Cadets) in 1994 in Frankfort (Illinois) by winning a bronze medal in the class up to 55 kg body weight. As a senior he was at the University World Championships in Tokyo for the first time in 2000 and was middleweight student world champion in front of the Iranian Majid Khodaee. At the US Olympic Trials in 2000 he failed to Mike Van Arsdale and at the USA championship that year he had to give up injured against Ray Brinzen.

Over the next few years he, meanwhile also a member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club , one of the best US wrestling clubs , was prepared specifically for the 2004 Olympic Games by trainer Bobby Douglas. Already in 2003 it became clear that this project could succeed, because Cael was runner-up in the middleweight division that year behind Saschid Saschidow from Russia . In 2001, however, he was very unlucky when, as the winner of the World Championship trials kuiz, he had to pass due to an injury before the World Championship. Also in 2002 he could not take part in the World Cup because the United States did not send a team to the World Cup in Tehran.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , Cael won the middleweight division with victories over Magomed Kuruglijew , Kazakhstan , Sergei Borchenko, Belarus , Majid Khodaee , Iran , Yoel Romero , Cuba and 3-1 over Moon Eui-jae from South Korea .

After the 2004 Olympics, Cael Sanderson succeeded Bobby Douglas as head coach at Iowa State University .
