David Schultz (wrestler)

David "Dave" Schultz (born June 6, 1959 in Palo Alto , California , † January 26, 1996 in Newtown Square , Pennsylvania ) was an American wrestler .

Career

Like most American wrestlers, David Schultz began his career in high school. After high school in Palo Alto, he attended universities in Oklahoma and won several NCAA championships here. In 1977 his international success began with a victory at the Pan American Championships. He achieved his first successes in the Greco-Roman style, later he switched to the free style. His greatest successes were the 1984 Olympic gold medal in Los Angeles and the 1983 World Cup in Kiev . He also won five other World Cup medals. He also played many international tournaments with strong players, some of which he won, for example in 1984 and 1991 in Tbilisi , 1985 in Tokyo , 1983, 1990 and 1991 in Paris and Clermont-Ferrand and at the 1986 Goodwill Games.

His brother Mark Schultz was also a very successful middleweight wrestler and Olympic champion in 1984 (up to 82 kg body weight).

David Schultz already worked as an active wrestler as a trainer at Stanford University , the University of Oklahoma and the University of Wisconsin . In 1995/96 he was the coach of the private wrestling team "Foxcatcher Squad" in Newtown Square, which was sponsored by the multi-millionaire John E. du Pont . Du Pont shot Schultz on January 26, 1996 out of an argument. David Schultz left his wife and two children and was buried in Ashland , Oregon . The events surrounding the incident were filmed in the 2014 drama Foxcatcher . Actor Mark Ruffalo took on the role of David Schultz .

For his services to wrestling , David Schultz was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame in August 2016 .
