Mitsuo Ikeda ( Japanese池田 三 男, Ikeda Mitsuo ; born March 14, 1935 in Mashike , Hokkaidō ; † September 12, 2002 ) was a Japanese welterweight freestyle wrestler and Olympic champion in Melbourne in 1956 .

Career

Mitsuo Ikeda was born in Hokkaido and started in high school with the rings . He later attended Chuo University in Tokyo, where he developed into a world-class free-style wrestler. In 1953, at the age of 18, he became the Japanese welterweight champion in free style. For the world championships in 1954 in free style in Tokyo, he could not qualify because Yutaka Kaneko defeated him in the Japanese championship. In 1956 he was able to turn the tables and place himself in front of Kaneko, whereupon he was sent to the Olympic Games in Melbourne.

In Melbourne Mitsuo showed excellent fights and, although he lacked any international experience, became Olympic champion with four wins . In the decisive battles he defeated İbrahim Zengin from Turkey and Wachtang Balawadze from the USSR each on points.

In the years up to 1960 Mitsuo lost again and again at the Japanese championships against Kaneko, so that he did not come to any further appearances at international championships. He then ended his wrestling career, completed his studies as a physical education teacher and was then a trainer in Tokyo.
