Jordan Ernest Burroughs (born August 7, 1988 in Camden , New Jersey ) is an American wrestler . He became world champion in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 and 2012 Olympic free style welterweight champion .
Career
The African American Jordan Burroughs began as a teenager in 1993 at the Winslow Township High School with the rings. His coach there was Rick Koss. He concentrated entirely on free style. As a high school wrestler, he won several district and regional championships until 2005. He has been attending the University of Nebraska since 2006 and lives in Lincoln . In 2006 he qualified for participation in the US Student Championship (NCAA Championships), but lost there in the lightweight against Dustin Schlatter and retired early.
In 2007 he took third place at the NCAA lightweight championships and in 2008 he won this lightweight title for the first time. He was then used at the Junior World Championships that year in Istanbul . He won points in the lightweight over Oltschas Tschinginbajew from Kazakhstan and Amit Kumar from India . However, he lost his third fight against Sandor Toeszer from Hungary , with which he was eliminated and finished in tenth place. In 2009 he was injured and had to undergo several operations. For this reason, he was unable to make any starts this year. In 2010 he made a comeback and was again NCAA champion in welterweight.
In 2011, Jordan Burroughs made his big breakthrough. He was USA welterweight champion before Nick Marable, Kirk White and Ryan Morningstar and also prevailed in the World Championship elimination tournament (Trials) with two wins over Andrew Howe. In May 2011 he won an international match in New York against Aniuar Gedujew from Russia on points (1-0, 2-1) and in July 2011 he also won the first major international tournament, which he played as a senior, the Ukrainian Wrestlers 'Memorial in Kiev . He won there in the welterweight division in front of Alibek Akbajew from Russia, Trent Paulson (USA) and Musa Murtazalijew from Armenia. Well equipped, he then drove to Istanbul for this year's World Cup . There he defeated Dmytro Rochniak from Ukraine , Denis Zargusch from Russia, Ricardo Moreno from Venezuela , Əşrəf Əliyev from Azerbaijan (0: 1, 5: 4, 3: 0) and Sadegh Saeed Goudarzi , Iran (3: 2, 4: 1 ) and became the new world champion. A few weeks later he also won the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara . He defeated the Cuban Yunierki Blanco Mora in the final with 2-0 rounds (3-2, 3-2 points).
He was thus considered the great US hope for the 2012 Olympic Games in London . There he was able to fulfill these hopes, because he became Olympic champion with victories over Francisco Soler from Puerto Rico , Matt Gentry , Canada, Denis Zargusch and Sadegh Saeed Goudarzi.
In 2013 Jordan Burroughs continued his series of successes at the World Championships in Budapest, where he was world champion with victories over Gamid Jalilow, Turkmenistan, Narsingh Pancham Yadav, India, Jabrail Hasanow , Azerbaijan, Ali Schabanau , Belarus and Essatollah Abbas Akbarizarinkolaei , Iran, as in 2011 . But he had to fight hard for the final victory over the Iranian Akbarizarinkolaei, because this was almost equal. The decisive factor for Jordan Burroughs' victory was his speed.
At his first start in an international tournament after the 2013 World Cup, Jordan Burroughs suffered a surprising defeat at the Yasar Dogu Memorial in Istanbul in February 2014. He lost there in the semifinals against his compatriot Nicholas Marable just on points and therefore only came in 3rd place in this tournament. At the 2014 World Cup in Los Angeles, a team competition in which he competed for the United States, he presented himself in great shape again. He won all five fights he fought over Gia Tschikladse, Ukraine, Varuschan Kajojan, Armenia, Parveen Rana, India, Essatolla Abbas Akbarizarinkolaei, his final opponent from the 2013 World Cup, which he clearly dominated this time, and Murad Ertuk from the Turkey. In April 2014 he was again USA champion in Las Vegas, but only achieved a narrow point victory (7: 6) in the final over David Taylor.
After his victory at the Pan American Championship in Mexico City in 2014, where he defeated the Cuban Livan Lopez in the final, Jordan Burroughs was again the favorite at this year's World Cup in Tashkent. At first he lived up to this role and defeated in the weight class up to 74 kg Augusto Midana , Guinea-Bissau , Lee Yun-seok, South Korea and Raschid Kurbanow, Uzbekistan. In the semifinals he was clearly defeated by Denis Zargusch from Russia, whereby the unambiguousness of this defeat was surprising. In the consolation round he managed to win a bronze medal in the World Cup with a victory over Rustam Dudajew from Ukraine.
Jordan Burroughs started the competition year 2015 successfully. In March of this year he was the welterweight tournament winner at the "Alexander Medved" prize in Minsk, ahead of Jakob Makarashvili, Georgia, Rasul Tichajew and Ali Schabanau, both from Belarus. At the 2015 Team World Cup in free style, which took place on 11/12. April 2015 was held in Los Angeles and was won by Iran before the United States, he was welterweight with wins over Liván López Azcuy , Cuba, Jakubali Schichdschamalow, Russia, Unurbat Purevjav , Mongolia and Morteza Rezaeigaleh, Iran, the best man in its weight class. In June 2015, Jordan Burroughs qualified at the American World Championship Trials by winning two wins over Kyle Dake for participation in the World Championship in Las Vegas.
But before that he won the Pan American Games in Toronto in his traditional weight class, the welterweight. He relegated Yoan Blanco Reinoso from Ecuador, Cristian Sarco Colmenarez, Venezuela and Livan Lopez Azcuy to the places.
At the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas, he was in excellent shape. Because of the high number of participants in his weight class, he needed six fights to win the world title again. He defeated Krystian Brzozowski from Poland, Oleg Sakharewitsch from Ukraine, Mihaly Nagy from Hungary, Alireza Mohammad Ghasemi from Iran, Aniuar Gedujew from Russia and Unurbat Purevjav from Mongolia. His toughest competitor turned out to be Aniuar Gedujew in the semifinals, against whom Jordan Burroughs had to do everything to win with 4: 3 points.
Jordan Burroughs' success story broke at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro . After a victory over Augusto Midana he lost to Aniuar Gedujew and Beksod Abdurachmanow from Uzbekistan and he only ended up in 9th place.
At the 2017 World Cup in Paris, Jordan Burroughs ironed this gap out again. There he defeated Livan Lopez Azcuy, Ali Schabanau, Sōsuke Takatani from Japan, Selimchan Chadijew, France, Beksod Abdurachmanow and Chetag Zabolow from Russia in six difficult fights and was world champion for the fourth time.
In April 2018, Jordan Burroughs was in the US team at the Team World Cup in Iowa City. With victories over Tarzan Maisuradze, Georgia, Yuhi Fujinami , Japan, Vinod Kumar Omprakash, India and Gadschimurad Omarow, Azerbaijan, he contributed significantly to American success. He did not start at the Pan American Championship in Lima in May 2018.
At the 2018 World Cup in Paris, Jordan Burroughs lost in the quarter-finals to Russian newcomer Saurbek Sidakow just 4: 5 techn. Points. Sidakow reached the final, so Jordan Burroughs was able to secure a bronze medal in the subsequent consolation round with victories over Miroslaw Kirow, Bulgaria and Frank Chamizo , Italy.
In April 2019 in Buenos Aires he became the Pan-American champion in the weight class up to 74 kg in superior style. On the way to this success he defeated u. a. Franklin Gomez Matos from Puerto Rico and in the final Jeron Balfour from Canada. In August 2019, Jordan Burroughs also won the Pan-American Games in Lima. In the same weight class he defeated Franklin Gomez Matos again in the final. At the World Cup this year in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, he defeated Asamat Nurikow, Belarus, Murad Kuramagomedow, a Caucasian wrestling for Hungary, and Chadschimurad Gadschijew, Azerbaijan. In the semifinals he just lost to defending champion Saurbek Sidakow. In the battle for a bronze medal, he finally came to an early victory (10-0 technical points) over Mao Okui from Japan.
In 2020, Jordan Burroughs won the title again in his weight class at the Pan American Championships in Ottawa. On the way to this success he beat Jorge Ivan Llano, Argentina, Geandry Garzon Caballero, Cuba and Franklin Gomez from Puerto Rico.
