Career

Musa Murtasalijew is of Dagestan origin and began wrestling as a teenager in Makhachkala in 2001, concentrating on free style. He is a student, but lives from wrestling. In the early years of his career, he started for Russia. Only one result is known from this period. He took 5th place in the welterweight division at the "Shamil Umakhanov" memorial in Chassavyurt in 2008.

Since he had very strong competition in Russia, he decided to start for Armenia in 2011. He has been trained by Araik Bagdadhian since then. He made his first start for Armenia in February 2011 at the renowned "Yasar Dogu" memorial in Istanbul. He won this welterweight tournament from Ruslan Valiev, Russia and Kachaber Chubeschti, Slovakia. In March 2011 he competed at the European Championships in Dortmund, where he reached the final with victories over Alberto Martinez Navarro, Spain, Kiril Tersiew , Bulgaria and Dawit Chutishvili, Georgia, in which he was defeated by Denis Zargusch from Russia. But winning the European Championship silver medal was a great success for him. At the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul he won over Oleg Motsalin, Greece and Yunieski Blanco Mora, Cuba. But then he lost to Əşrəf Əliyev from Azerbaijan. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 13th place.

In 2012 he had to realize that it is not so easy to stay in the top international group of wrestlers. At the European Championships in Belgrade he still came 8th after victories over Marius Lucian Atofanin, Romania and Miroslaw Dikun, Great Britain and a defeat against Aleksandr Qostiyev from Azerbaijan. In two subsequent Olympic qualifying tournaments, however, he did not succeed in qualifying for participation in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

At the end of 2012, Musa Murtasalijew moved from world champion to middleweight division. In February 2013 he managed a remarkable tournament victory in Kiev, where he was able to relegate István Veréb from Hungary and the former world champion Ibragim Aldatow from Ukraine to the places.

At the 2013 European Championships in Tbilisi he was able to convince again and fight his way into the final with victories over Michael Bodnar, Slovakia, Ibragim Aldatow and Piotr Janulow, Moldova. In this he lost to the defending champion and local hero Dato Marsagishvili . At the World Championships in Budapest that year he failed to win a medal. After victories over Piotr ianulow, Moldova and Marco Riesen, Switzerland, he lost against Ibragim Aldatow , Ukraine and against István Veréb , Hungary and only came in 11th place.

In 2014 he was back at the European Championships, which took place in Vantaa / Finland. He wrestled in the new weight class up to 86 kg and won there over Rene Matejov, Slovakia and Timofei Xenidis, Greece, then lost to Murad Gaidarow from Belarus, then fought his way to the consolation round with a victory over Alexander William Dolly from Ireland an EM bronze medal.
