Dawit "Dato" Marsagishvili ( Georgian დათო მარსაგიშვილი ; born March 30, 1991 in Kazbek ) is a Georgian wrestler . He won in the World Cup 2011 and the Olympic Games 2012 in London each a bronze medal and was 2012 and 2013 European champion in free style in the middleweight division .

Career

Dato Marsagishvili began wrestling in 1997 in Kazbek under the guidance of his father Levan Marsagishvili. He concentrated on the free style and developed into an excellent wrestler as a junior. In 2009 he was accepted into the Georgian national team of freestyle wrestlers and has been training with Dawid Churtsija in a wrestling center in Tbilisi since then . He is still a student and starts middleweight at a height of 1.86 meters.

He made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the European Junior Championships (Cadets) 2007 in Warsaw . He finished there in the weight class up to 76 kg behind the Turkish Ibrahim Bülükbasi and won a medal. After an 8th place at the Junior European Championship (Cadets) 2008 in Daugavpils in the weight class up to 85 kg, he won the silver medal again at the Junior European Championship 2009 in Tbilisi in the middleweight division . He was only defeated there in the final battle against the Russian Koloi Kortojew. In the same year he won a medal at the Junior World Championships in Ankara, the bronze one. Koloi Kortojew and Aslanbek Alborov from Azerbaijan landed in front of him.

Dato Marsagishvili suffered a setback in 2010. After quick defeats he only came 12th at the European Junior Championships in Samokow / Bulgaria and only 16th at the World Junior Championships in Budapest . In September 2010, he was used by the Georgian Wrestling Association at the Senior World Championships in Moscow . He won there in the middleweight division against István Verébb from Hungary , but was defeated in his next fight against the experienced Ibragim Aldatow from Ukraine , with which he was eliminated and finished in 8th place. In 2010, with a victory over Bega Tschelidze, he was also Georgia's senior champions for the first time.

Dato Marsagishvili was very successful in 2011. He won a medal at four international championships. In the junior division, he could not be beaten at the European Championships in Zrenjanin or at the World Championships in Bucharest and won both titles. He was also in excellent shape at the European Championships in Dortmund , defeating Dejan Bogdanow from Macedonia , Ibrahim Bülükbasi, Marco Riesen, Switzerland and Gheorghiță Ștefan from Romania and thus faced Ansor Urischew from Russia in the final . In a balanced fight he was defeated by 1: 2 rounds with 5: 7 technical points. He then wrestled just as convincingly at the World Cup in Istanbul . There he defeated Emzarios Bentinidis , Greece and Gheorghita Stefan, lost in the quarterfinals to Ibragim Aldatow (1: 2 rounds, 6: 9 points) and then won in the consolation round with victories over Amarhadschy Mahamedau , Belarus and Armands Zvirbulis , Latvia (2: 0 rounds, 10: 0 points) another World Championship bronze medal.

In March 2012 Dato Marsagishvili won his first title at an international senior championship. He became European champion in Belgrade . He defeated the former world champion Mikhail Ganew from Bulgaria in the final on points. At the Olympic Games in London he won a bronze medal with a victory over Orgodolyn Üitümen , Mongolia , a somewhat surprising defeat against Jaime Yusept Espinal from Puerto Rico and with wins in the consolation round over Andrew Adibo Dick , Nigeria and Soslan Gattsijew , Belarus.

In 2013 he repeated his title win from the European Championship 2012 in Tbilisi. He defeated Dominic Klaus Peter, Austria, Andrei Frant, Romania, Ansor Urischew and Musa Murtasalijew, Armenia, in the middleweight division. At the World Championships that year in Budapest, he was without a medal. He won there first over Nicolai Paslar, Bulgaria and Keith Gavin from the United States, but then lost to Ehsan Lashgari au Iran and was eliminated because Lashgari did not reach the final. That's why he only came in 10th place.

At the 2014 European Championship in Vantaa / Finland, Dato Marsagishvili started in the weight class up to 85 kg. There he defeated Dominic Klaus Peter and Ville Heino from Finland, and lost to Abdulraschid Sadulajew from Russia in the third round . Since this reached the final, he was able to continue in the consolation round, in which he initially defeated Sebastian Jezierszankski from Poland, but lost to István Veréb from Hungary in the fight for an EM bronze medal . He reached the 5th place.
