qualification

Qualification criteria

344 athletes, 72 women and 266 men, as well as three guaranteed starting places for the host NOK and three starting places that the International Wrestling Federation (FILA) will award by invitation will take part in the competitions. Each NOK may only provide one athlete per discipline. Achieving quota places is decisive for a starting place.

The first opportunity to qualify was the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul . There the first six athletes qualified in the Olympic weight classes, a total of 108 athletes. The second qualification phase consists of continental tournaments in March and April 2012, in which the first two athletes in each weight class qualify, i.e. 36 athletes each from Europe , Asia , America and Africa / Oceania . In the third qualification phase, a total of 50 athletes, three men and two women per weight class, qualify at an international qualification tournament in Taiyuan and finally another 36 athletes, two per weight class, at a final international qualification tournament in Helsinki .

NOKs who have already achieved a quota place in one weight class are no longer allowed to compete in the relevant weight classes in the further qualification phase. After completion of the qualification phase on June 1, 2012, the FILA will award the last starting places by invitation. The host NOK may use its three quota places in any weight class. If the host's athletes win regular quota places, the guaranteed quota places are withdrawn, which are then also awarded by invitation.
