Beijing 2008

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in the British capital, London , ten sailing competitions were held from July 29 to August 11 , four for women and six for men.

The IOC had modified the competition program compared to Beijing 2008 : instead of eleven, only ten competitions were held. The open boat class Tornado and the women's class Yngling had been canceled . New to the program for women was the Elliott 6m class , which was held as a match race . The 49er and Finn Dinghy, which were still open classes in Beijing in 2008 , now officially counted as men's competitions, after almost exclusively men competed in these classes in the past.

The venue was the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy between Weymouth and the island of Portland , around 190 kilometers from the city center of London on the south coast of England.

qualification

Qualification criteria

380 athletes were allowed to take part in the competitions, 136 women and 228 men. Each country can nominate one boat per class, i.e. a maximum of 16 athletes. Great Britain is guaranteed a quota place in each class as the host. The main qualifying competition was the 2011 World Championships for all classes in Perth , where 75 percent of all quota places in a class were awarded. Further qualification regattas were the ISAF World Championships for the individual classes in 2012, in which the remaining 25 percent of the quota places for each class were allocated. If there was no world championship in a class in 2012, the ISAF organized a qualifying regatta in which the quota places could be achieved. If a boat belonging to a NOK that had already achieved a quota place in this class landed in a qualifying regatta in 2012 on a place that guaranteed a quota place, the next best boat without a quota place got it.
