Alejandro Foglia

Alejandro José Foglia Costa (born January 30, 1984 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan sailor .

The 1.89 meter tall athlete called Chino completed his education at the German School in Montevideo . Foglia comes from the Montevidean Barrio Parque Rodó and studies sports education at the Instituto Superior de Educación Física . He started sailing at the age of seven. Three years later he took part in his first competition. His first boat was one of the Optimist- class. The brother of the sailors Andrea Foglia and Mariana Foglia belongs to the Yacht Club Punta del Este . His laser trainer is Luis Chiapparro . Oscar Gadea is responsible for Foglia's physique . In 1996 he made his international debut at the Optimist South American Championship in Ecuador .

At the South American Championships in Cartagena in 1998 he reached a 3rd place with the team in the Optimist class. In the same year he was also in the Uruguayan team for the South American Games in 1998 . In addition, he competed in two world championships and a total of four South American championships. In the Snipe class he finished ninth at the Junior World Championships in Spain, third at the Junior South American Championships and has so far sailed more than 25 international competitions in this boat class. In 2002 he took part again in the South American Games, but did not reach a podium there.

After finishing second at the Campeonato Hemisferio in 2005 , he won it the following year. He finished the Argentine championships in 2006 as runner-up. In the same year he was a member of the Uruguayan squad at the 2006 South American Games . He finished the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro in sixth place. That year he had 22nd place in the ranking at the Melbourne World Championships and was fourth at the South American Championships in Mar del Plata .

The multiple Uruguayan champion (2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007) Foglia also took part in the 2004 Summer Olympics. There he finished 34th in the Finn dinghy class. At the 2008 Olympic Games he was again at the start for Uruguay and also acted as the flag bearer of the Uruguayan Olympic team. In Beijing , he finished 17th. Foglia was also a participant in the laser standard class at the 1st Beach South America Games in Montevideo and Punta del Este 2010. He also took part in the South American Games 2010 in Medellín .

Foglia was once again part of the Uruguayan squad for the 2011 Pan American Games and the 2012 Summer Olympics . In London he started in the laser competition. There he exceeded the prognoses and expectations, secured himself eighth place with a second place in the medal race in the final accounts and thus achieved the Olympic diploma . At the same time he was the best Latin American in this competition. Since his sister also took part in the Olympic Games in London, a sibling pair was represented in Uruguay's team for the third time in the country's Olympic history after 1936 ( Baldomiro and Gabriel Benquet ) and 2004 ( Paul and Martín Kutscher ).
