Initially, Kleen formed a duo with helmsman Matthias Miller as a bow and came with him in 16th place at his first international championships, the 2005 European championships in Västervik . From 2005 to 2007 he led the national rankings with his respective partners. In 2006 they became German runners-up and tenth at the European Championships in Hamburg . For the Olympic Games in 2008 they came into the perspective squad, but did not qualify in the end against Ingo Borkowski and Marc Pickel . In 2007 Alexander Hagen became his helmsman. At the World Championships in Cascais , Kleen / Hagen came in 16th, at the European Championships in Malcesine, 19th. At the World Cup races in Kiel in 2007 and 2008 they came third. If the 12th place at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro was still in the frame, the 30th place at the European Championships in Viareggio was rather negative. After that, Alexander Schlonski surprisingly parted ways with Frithjof Kleen. From summer onwards, Frithjof Kleen sailed on the foreshore of international helmsmen and did very successfully. In Weymouth he won the World Cup with helmsman Peter Oleary (Ireland), at the North American Championships he won the title with George Szabo. Robert Scheidt (Brazilian superstar) also secured the services of the German. In 2010 and 2011 they reached first place in the world rankings. They finished second at the Eastern Hemisphere Championship. Since 2010 he has been part of the prospect squad for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .

In 2011, Kleen formed a new sailing duo with Robert Stanjek . Success came quickly. They finished second at the World Cup in Palma , as well as at the World Championships in Perth behind Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada . They finished fourth in the overall World Cup. The election for 2011 sailor of the year was a personal success . She finished ninth at the 2012 European Championships in San Remo , and eleventh at the World Championships in Hyères . At that time Stanjek / Kleen qualified for the Olympic Games. In the competitions before Weymouth they were sixth. A better placement prevented a disqualification in the seventh race. The medal race they finished in third and thus achieved their best finish at the Olympic racing series.

In 2008 Kleen became world champion in the Swan 45 class . A year later he was third in the world championships. At the European Dragon Championships he and his team won the silver medal as a coach , and his team won the Gold Cup .
