Västervik is a city in the Swedish province of Kalmar län and the historic province of Småland . It is nicknamed "Pearl of the East Coast" (Swedish "Ostkustens pärla").
The city is a popular tourist destination, especially in summer. The largest employer in Västervik is the municipality of the same name , the main town of which is Västervik. The mechanical engineering and paint industries are also important and the Västerviks Tidningen newspaper has its headquarters here. The team from the local speedway club rides in the top Swedish class.
Attractions
Västervik is known for its low fishermen's houses that some visitors have to duck their heads when entering.
The place is the starting point for a narrow-gauge museum railway to Hultsfred . The 70 km long journey leads through Ankarsrum through a landscape rich in lakes.
The observation tower, Unos Torn , built in 1997 , was built with the help of a donation from a dentist from nearby Gamleby . The 18 meter high tower allows a wide view over Västervik and the adjacent archipelago .
A song festival is held every year in the castle ruins of Stegeholm .
The converter station of the HVDCGotland, the oldest commercial HVDC system at all, is located near Västervik .
Also near Västervik is the Fårhultsmasten , a guyed transmitter mast for VHF and TV, which is one of the four tallest structures in Sweden.
