Ljubljana and Ljubljanica

Tromostovje (German three bridges ) is one of the landmarks of Ljubljana , the capital of Slovenia . The first mention of a wooden bridge over the Ljubljanica at this point dates from around 1280. The wooden bridge had to be rebuilt in 1657 after a fire and was replaced in 1842 by a stone bridge designed by Giovanni Picco, an Italian architect. This bridge was named Francev most (Franzensbrücke) in memory of Archduke Karl Franz . This stone arch bridge is the central element of the modern bridge. It was expanded into a triple bridge in 1929 by the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik (1872–1957). He added pedestrian bridges on both sides, widening the bridge and preventing it from becoming a bottleneck. His work was completed in 1932.

North of the Three Bridges is Prešeren Square , the main town square.
