Ulf Grenander

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulf Grenander (born July 23, 1923 in Västervik ; † May 12, 2016 in Providence (Rhode Island) ) was a Swedish mathematician who dealt with mathematical methods of shape and pattern recognition ( pattern theory ).

Grenander studied at Uppsala University and received his doctorate in 1950 from Harald Cramér at Stockholm University (stochastic processes and statistical inference). 1950/51 and 1954 to 1957 he was a lecturer at Stockholm University. 1951/52 he was an assistant professor at the University of Chicago and in 1953 an associate professor at the University of California. 1957/58 he was a professor at Brown University before he went back to Stockholm University from 1959 to 1966, where he succeeded Cramer as professor. From 1966 he was again a professor at Brown University, which he remained until his retirement. At the same time he was Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Royal Technical University in Stockholm from 1969 to 1974 .

Initially he dealt with probability theory , stochastic processes, time series analysis and mathematical statistics , where he introduced a sieve estimator . He later turned to pattern recognition and artificial intelligence . He has been pursuing his statistical theory ( pattern theory ) at Brown University since the early 1970s; it is also pursued by David Mumford , for example .

Applications that his group is pursuing include recognizing anatomical patterns from computer tomography data of the brain, automatic target acquisition, computer vision and the processing of natural language.

In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berlin ( Strategies of seeing ).

In 1994 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Chicago and in 2005 from the Royal Stockholm University of Technology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . He is an honorary member of the Royal Statistical Society and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
